Snorkel/ what works?

Maybe I should check into a precleaner. Yep just remove the plastic antenna cover or cut the end off and install the spacer. But if you have the AntennaX offroad antenna it will still contact the snorkel.

I will have to post a pick of my cold air intake. I pull air above the engine,no longer in the fender well. The intake plugging up with snow is my main problem. If water is above the engine, well I have bigger problems. If I could raise the electronics as high as a snorkel kit, I would have already done it. We all have different wants and needs. The old girl is just looking for cleaner air. Spinning the 90 around is a great idea. Has any one run the K&N sock over the filter? This would seem easy to stop and clean.

I'd no doubt run it turned around due to the love bugs, mosquitoes, and giant june bugs we have around here! It would just inhale them and clog up the air filter pretty quick. Or I'd invest in one of the air intake filters on top of the snorkel that's round. On my Alpha I'm running a 3inch stubby AntennaX, and honestly I'd rather just get rid of the antenna altogether vs install that spacer. That looks like more a tree/limb catcher for sure (searched online for the pics) vs the actual snorkel. I'd have no plans on crossing a river, but cooler air would be nice. With my ARB Bumper the front of the fender liner is open more vs the OEM setup so a big enough splash or wave would go directly into the airbox/engine. I would like to have a snorkel to eliminate that risk for sure.

A snorkel will certainly help cross a river, but you have to have every single thing sealed up from axles, breathers, PCM/TCM/BCM, and all electrical connections. Most rigs you see driving thru rivers down under, or in Africa are diesel's and they're much better at water crossings vs gas engines.

Idk if this been talked before but how does these air cleaner cyclone things work when combine with the I5 I see most of the folks here use and run these air cleaner with the V8.

I think snorkel-use is sort of misunderstood. Unlike hard-core Jeep guys...I bought mine not to do "crazy deep-water river crossings" but, rather to prevent the occasional "dip the RF fender into the goo" problem. Its hard to tell how deep a hole is by looking at flat surface water. Several times I started into what appeared to be a mild mud hole...only to have the entire bottom drop out from under it, half-way through! When this happens, you've got one basic 4WD strategy....FLOOR IT! Hopefully, you will keep the air-intake above the water line and get to the far side of the hole.

This happened to me before I had the snorkel. I made it through but, the motor stumbled and clearly I had submerged the intake tube. It was a massive hole. I held the throttle steady at 1200 rpms for a minute or two, and she cleared-up. Then I shut the motor off, opened the air filter box, and found a couple cups of water, and a soaked air filter. I mopped it up and got on my way...no damage. But it could have been much worse and several guys on the forums have destroyed motors doing this same thing. So the next day I ordered the ARB kit....cheap insurance. That's back when I had the Rancho.

Fast forward three years and thousands of dollars in mods, and I'm now sitting 6"+ over stock. I simply don't have this "fender dunk" issue any more. The biggest issue I have now, is that every time I show up at a trail, I get a bunch of Jeep guys standing around all gape-mouthed...egging me on to do something stupid (like Jeep guys are known to do). The snorkel seems to be a giant "hey watch this" badge, and that's really not what I'm about. Its appearance is so over-the-top, and I wish there was a way to get a higher intake without drawing a crowd.

About the only other way is how Amanda made hers with the h1 intake cap I guess. Everytime I pull up to jeep guys they start trying to run me into the biggest hole because of the snorkel so I always make sure if its a new trail that I'm not the first rig or two. Like cj I bought it for cheap insurance because I've see. My passengers fender dip before and it instantly scared the crap out of me!

Best4x4 you could get away with a stubby antenna without it catching to many limbs. I run a shortened factory antenna with no issue. Plus the mirror is still wider so if anything it will be your limb catcher.

Torres I think I've read about that somewhere. IIRC it wasn't a perfect match as far as CFM air flow but a few guys were running them without any issues
