H3 Heavy Duty Skid Plate

I want to update you guys with what is happening with the skid plates. I tested them out last Saturday, and are they are diffidently kickass to say the least. However my prototype isn't quite perfect yet, but it is very close. I was whaling repeatedly on my H3 trying to make it up and over a ledge to prove a point with my skids plates. I should have video of it very soon, hopefully I don't scare you guys with it, but the skid plates held up. However I have run into a slight delay, because I want to make them stronger in one spot by adding more metal and look into the possibility of adding another bolt.

Not sure if any of you are aware of how muddy Attica Badlands is, but I had absolutely no problem with mud when I was there. It was neat to come home and not have any mud built up any where underneath my Hummer.

If you are increasing the width I would like to see what you end up with. I like the fact that the sides have a bend for strength. I would also like some reinforcing ribs on the inside like the picture from bebe. I was going to build something similiar to what you have here. At first I thought you were making a flat skid. If I build my on I will have two bends at the out side edge instead of a single one like you currently have. If I make it back to Moab in October I will be able to test it. You saw my current results.

I'm excited to say that I have finally reached the point where I want another person to help test out my solid skid plates. This means I need you to bottom out your H3 and get it dirty as soon as you can, but that shouldn't be hard with the nice weather now. I don't have the price quote yet because I'm giving the laser cutter the new measurements today after work, but for this you'll need to have $200 - $300 ready and the cost of shipping if needed. If any of you are willing to drive to my house in Marengo, IL you will have the first opportunity at these solid skid plates because I would like to install it with you in my garage full of tools. Finally to mount these skid plate there has to be a total of four 3/8 holes drilled into two of the cross-members, but these cross-members bolt on to the frame rails and are easily replaced.

As a side note to the Nutserts that I mentioned in the past, they have been completely done away with. I decided to just slide some metal with a bolt welded to it into the cross-members and sandwich skid-plate to the cross-member. These piece that slide into the cross-member can be tacked into place with a welder if you wanted but this isn't necessary.

I'm really looking forward to this.

I live outside Chicago. It gets into the hundreds every once in a while and I'll be watching it with a laser temperature senor.
Suggestion. Does the tranny have a temperature sensor? If so, the OBD2 should be able to read it correct? I know I can on my 2001 Silverado. That way you can monitor the temp on your next run.

Sadly the H3 doesn't have sensor that you can monitor for the trans using the OBD2 device I got.

Honestly it isn't going to be problem, the gap between the trans and the skid plate is huge. My hand wide open doesn't even touch when sticking it in there.

Yes, you can with the scanguage ii. I have one and watch the temps daily.

That should work. I was joking about this weekend. Just let me know the price. I'm interested to see what it looks like compared to the design your running now.

It's very similar, just some extra metal to fill in the gaps to make a smoother transition from solid skid plates to the gas tank skid. Also has the bolt hole already in it so that we shouldn't have to drill any holes and a little bit better placement with some of the draining.

Anyway this should be fun next weekend, look forward to seeing the quick disconnects of yours.

So I think I have decided that 3/8 of inch steel is better. I giggle every time I go near the second pre production skid plates I hope to bolt on another rig tomorrow.

Well, I would like to get this pre production skid plate on someones H3 soon so I can finish up this project. So the first person with an H3 that can make it to my house and can pay $330, which is just the material cost of these skid plates, gets them first. Hit me up, I am however headed to Kentucky for rock climbing this Thursday and will be back on Monday after which I'll be able to put them on any day you can make it to my house.

WOW. That doesn't look like just a skid-plate. That looks like full on armor. Are you trying to ride over the mine field?
What is the combines weight of this 2 plates?
