Ok i decided to research this some more but instead of looking on hummer boards I started looking at gmc colorado boards. Jackpot! Apparently its very common and is the camshaft positioning solenoid. The solenoid has these screens on it that get torn off and sucked into the engine. Brilliant design. I took 3 minutes. Pulled mine out and it was indeed missing the screen

You can see where the camshaft position solenoid is located on the left of the engine just behind the oil filler cap. There is one 10mm bolt holding it in place. Disconnect the sensor from the harness, take out the one bolt and pull it out.

This what it looks like. Notice the screens, if the oil gets old & junky it will pull these screens off and it will get pulled into the engine. genius!

Well there's my problem! Oreilly's only had the old part that had the defective design. They have updated the part with no screens. it was $58 at my chevy dealer.

I'm convinced Jiffy lube put conventional oil in my truck, The regular and synthetic didnt mix good and got sludgey, it blew my oil pressure sensor and then a week later the camshaft position solenoid.

heres a pic of the old style and the redesigned part. you DO NOT want the old style with the screens. Colorado owners are reporting this failing on trucks with 18000 and 30000 miles. crazy. I put the new sensor in, cranked her up and she is purring like a kitten. $60, 5 minute fix. Wish I had searched the colorado boards first. Check this sensor first before tearing your air intake apart. its super simple. My wife could do this. in the rain at night if she needed to.

Part to certainly update to the newer style for sure. All the local part stores had the old design near me.

I removed mine to inspect it, and the center screen had what looked like carbon deposits over each hole... I scrubbed it off with a toothbrush, but I'll be buying a new design as soon as I can just as a CYA kinda thing.

This thread saved my bacon today! 500 miles from home and the truck threw a P0017 code. I found this thread and replaced the solenoid and the truck is back to normal! Thank you!!
