Coolant

Hey guys, got out of my hummer today and smelled coolant. It's been 100+ degrees here in south texas. My temperatures are fine. A/C is blowing cold. Should I be worried? I've had my check engine light on for awhile now. I'm worried a little. Help?

First things first... Go get your codes read and figure out why you have a CEL on.....
Then pop your hood and do a visual inspection. Look all around the radiator. If you have to, get a flashlight. The radiators are notorious for developing little leaks... So look for wet spots. It may not be spraying all over, just weeping a little.

If you smell coolant, you have a problem. Like digs said I would start by inspecting the radiator first

Check the top header of the radiator and see if there is coolant pooling around the seal. Hopefully, the smell is from the outside and not the inside. Radiator is easy to replace, heater core is a pain in the a$$

I found a little near the hose coming from the header. Took it in for some service and one of the hummer technicians mentioned that a bad thermostat can sometimes do that because it won't close and it somehow causes coolant to boil up and spill somewhere? I don't know... I already had an inkling that the thermostat might be failing from an error code read I had done awhile back.

Put a hose clamp on the vent line at the neck of the radiator. It's just slipped on and they can sometimes seep.

Just got the call from the dealership. Bad t stat and a small leak from radiator. He mentioned something that it was near the top of the radiator where the cap is. He mentioned that's where they saw the small leak. Broken cap maybe? Don't know yet

I'm wanting to do that t stat replacement myself. Did you also do the CTS, Cali? How hard is it to make the change?

If the leak is up by the neck of the radiator it's one of two things. Bad Radiator cap gasket, or a loose hose going to the reservoir. If the leak looks lower and is towards the front of the radiator it could be a hairline crack in the tank. Wipe it down, drive it and let it cool. Then inspect it again, you should see a white/pinkish stain from where it's leaking. When I replaced my wife's 07 H3's radiator with a Silla unit I had to install a hose clamp onto the hose going to the reservoir. It just wouldn't get a good seal and it would leave a drip. Bought a small hose clamp from a hardware store and the problem went away.

Honestly if it's a crack in the upper radiator tank it'll usually spew coolant.

The caddy? Have 0% probs with it so far, its a 2014 so I would be pretty pissed if it did. I didn't replace it myself on the H2 I have a friend who owns a mechanic shop who's really good with trucks and what not so I lucked out not having to pay labor.

Oh I was talking about the coolant temperature sensor. I never would have thought you had a Caddy haha. Sry
