Wrecked my H3 seeking advice

All, a little over 3 weeks ago i was involved in a collision in an intersection and totaled my H3. Accident was my fault, everyone walked away.
Well after back and forth with insurance and the body shop, the original estimate form geico was 5100 dollars worth of damage, new estimate is at 16,500, big jump I know. Evidently, and I saw this with my own eyes, the frame bent and crumpled in the crumple zone pretty badly, bad enough the body shop isn't willing to bend the frame back as it will then be structurally not sound, so it needs a new frame which is 5k new from GM. Here's what i am faced with

In Indiana, you can keep a totaled vehicle if you want, so i have a couple of options

Option #1 total value that geico will pay including the deductible is 20k(evidently they take into account mods if i have proof of payment), if I do not keep the vehicle. I can take that money and run, and find another H3 down the road/ do whatever.
option #2 would be to buy it back from geico which is the salvage price of around 5-6k(will not get a salvage title as it is over 7 years old in indiana), which puts the check i get at 14k~ish dollars. I would then pay out of pocket anything additional that the body shop charges past the 14k, which could be alot as more damage/little things come up.

So what would you do, yes the smart and easy financial move is to just total it and take the cash, but remember this vehicle has a lot of sentimental value to me (a hard value to quantify)

Here are a couple of pics

Buy it back, offer them $4k maybe they will take it. Then start looking for a used alpha that has not been wrecked.

I bet you could get a nice one for $20k

Then take the parts off your old one that you want to keep and put on your new rig. Then part out your old or just keep it.. you know they don't make them anyone... lol

It might cost you more.. but you could have a newer alpha that hasn't been wrecked... and keep your old one.

It beats having to deal with a body shop for months and months while they attempt to fix your rig.

That's just my thoughts on it.. good luck. I'm glad you're ok and no one got hurt.

I think you should buy it back, take the parts you can off the wrecked H3, part out and sell the rest of the working parts on the wrecked H3 or resell the whole thing as a salvage title, and look around for a nice Alpha if you can or an adventure package with front and rear lockers.

Glad you are okay!

Buy the salvaged unit from them, get prices from an auction so you know you are paying the right value in the current market for it.

Look for an alpha, buy it, move parts over, take what spares you want from the wrecked unit and then sell the rest.

Here is another photo, as you can see the whole drivers side interior body supports are bent, will probably have to be removed and new ones welded in, not sure if anything was pushed further into the firewall, which could be a hug pain to repair.

Sorry to hear and see that. I would also take the 20k and search for a good used one.

I like chris laun's idea, I say if it runs, buy it back and do something AWESOME with it. Practice welding on it or cut everything off or something. Theres tons of nice offroad only trucks that are way more capable than a jeep that were started because of a salvage title. Worst case you can part it out and make some money back.

Wow.....breaks my heart to see that. But I would personally take the $20k and look for another. I don't know much about car repairs, but I've seen worse get repaired and salvaged.

You've got all the good Alpha parts right there. You could probably complete one of the easiest I5 to Alpha swaps in this forum. Hopefully all the nickel-and-dime parts you might need that may need replacement don't make it infeasible. I think I'd look for an I5 truck to swap your parts to. Good luck!

That sucks man :( what would you want to take off this H3 and put onto a new one? The bumper seems destroyed...maybe the rack? If you could take some of the parts you want and put it on another H3 that would be probably the financially best thing to do but then again if your willing to put up with the headache you could probably find enough hoarders to buy stuff off you. Storing the rig would be a pain and people would probably want what you are trading over to the new rig.

The sentimental part is the worst. I would be devastated if that happened. I hope the best for you on this decision

Thanks for the replies, yea the sentimental thing is weighing on me. The only thing i would really take from it would be the rack and lights.

Unfortunately keeping and storing it while i find another one, and parting it out isn't an option. I don't have the space to store it. As far as a cool trail rig, again no space to store it and work on it in that manner due to living conditions (apt).

Thanks for the input though, its more or less, take the total cash, or pay to have it fixed and venture into a realm of a lot of variables.

btw that's line-x platinum/ whatever the highest grade they offer is on the bumper, it held up insanely well, stuff is crazy strong.

All pre-owned vehicles in the levant area (mid east) are salvage titles from the US, with minimal frame damage just like this one. They buy em for 1-3k each in bulk from America, ship them to countries here and sell them for profit.

As far as sentiment goes... There is a slim chance your truck wont end up abroad.

EDIT: Any chance we can see the damage on the other car?

$12k and keep the truck? No brainer around here. SAS it...fix the frame...fix the radiator...maybe the body (eventually). Or maybe not.
It's easy to say when you've got the tools and place to do it. I totally understand your situation and it's vastly different from mine. Apartment life is not very rebuild friendly.

If I had the tools, space, garage, etc., I would keep it only to strip parts off of it and I would buy a new one. Beyond that, take the $20K. That's a good offer.

If you don't have the space or time to rebuild it or modify it, take the money and run! That H3 would never be the same again. Just be thankful everyone walked away.

Take the 20 and start over. Now you know what you liked and what you wished you did differently, so, start over. As stated before, unless you have the space, time, tools, and knowledge, a major mod will be a big undertaking.

I 4th or 5th the motion to take the $20K and run if you don't have the place to work on it.

Also, if the insurance company is not going to give you extra money for the accessories, I would tell them that you are taking it then (since they are saying it has no value without the receipt) that is assuming they are worth taking off of course!
