One of the extra benefits of a stick. The manual is based on road speed (5mph, I think), instead of shift lever position. In GM's defense, I think that's actually a government regulation now to have auto locks. Remember, the government thinks we're too dumb to keep from falling out of our car without their help.

On my manual trans, turning the key off unlocks only the drivers door. All doors will automatically lock when I reach 15MPG. However, the computer gets crazy when the ignition is cycled a lot in a short time. When it gets quirky, weird thing happen like the doors will lock on power off, the dome light will not work and the radio will stay off for several cycles. I am sure it is something simple like the "ignition on/off" signal is not getting caught by sensors on the data bus.

In my case...I think it was the concussion from a rather large home-made explosive device. I'm pretty sure the USGS picked up the shock wave on the seismic grid....it was a doozy! For some reason my H3 locked itself...that's the only explanation I can come up with. It was brand new at the time. Since then the doors have locked themselves one other time but, the keys were not inside it.

Cbetts....you can change how your auto-locks work. There are 3 settings to choose from and you access them thru the DIC. Like all things DIC...its a horrendously complicated and clumsy way to do change something that shouldn't be there anyway. I don't think it works on gear-selection...with the AT or the stick. Instead it works on brake-pedal release or MPH. Study your manual...I could be wrong but, I think the choices are something like: 15mph, or when you let off the brake, and also whether its just the drivers door or all of them. Like 08H3 says...the government has ruled that "Off" is not one of the three options.

FWIW...I was perfectly happy with plain ole electric door locks.

On that topic: How many times has your spotter jumped out of the shotgun seat...got you directed thru a tight spot on the trail...then damn near rip the door handle off trying to re-enter the passenger door? Yeah...TOO FREAKING MANY! Disabling the automatic door locks has always been a mod I would love to do. I think its absurd that GM took the time to design three separate modes that we can choose from...and none of them is "OFF".

Duh.

Funny back story on this is GM added the auto lock feature a year after Ford did. The feature works fine on a Ford. You start driving and the doors lock. GM did the same thing but overlooked the fact that on Fords the front doors unlock when you pull the door release. GM had to go back and add the unlock feature after a "few" customer complaints.
