Ahhhhh ... I don't keep a spare key on my undercarriage but if I did I sure as hell wouldn't post the location on the World Wide Web :hammer:

If you are a paying OnStar member, they will pop the door unlock for you to get into if you locked your keys in. I've never had to use it but I keep my OnStar card on me just to have the phone number if it happens.

Just zip tie a brick to your spare tire, problem solved! No but really I would not take the risk of hiding a key on the outside of it I would be to concerned some jag off would find it and steal it.

If I did this, my spare or spares would be probably be lying on a trail somewhere

Whatever...I still carry a spare on my H3. I haven't checked in a very long time....not sure its even under there anymore. In the past, my H3 had a nasty habit of locking itself with the keys inside. The first, last, and only call I ever made to OnStar was so they could unlock it from space.

OnStar....Just another totally useless GM feature.

True. Your spares are about as secure as the Lakers making the playoffs.

BTW, I don't hide a key mostly I'm very careful as to how I handle my keys, minimizing any risk.

So my remote fob broke awhile back. It broke where the key-ring went thru the plastic....so it still works, I just have to carry it separately and sometimes I don't have it with me. Anyway...whenever I try to unlock my H3 with the key, it starts honking until I get the key into the ignition. Its ridiculous! I mean...the truck knows its the correct key, right? So why is it honking? I'm opening it from the outside...just like anybody would do to any car. In the past, I've had other cars that would do this if you reached in through the window and unlocked the door from the inside without a key (like if you were using a coat-hanger). But I don't get this on the H3....I'm doing exactly what I should be doing, and it still honks up a storm.

Ironically...I started carrying the spare key because my H3 would lock the doors by itself, WITH THE KEYS IN THE IGNITION!!! Maybe its just me but, if I were designing a computerized starting system...seems like the very first line of instruction would be:

IF CODED KEY IS PRESENT IN THE IGNITION TUMBLER...DISABLE DOOR LOCKS.

Think about it. What situation would you ever want to lock the doors with the key in the ignition? Duh! That's just basic common sense. So...this is why I carry a spare key.

I guess you'd have to make a choice - do you want a higher tech key, and $50 replacement keys, or keep the current system where the fob controls the alarm and the key is just for locks.

Of course if you lock only with the key then the alarm isn't set and the honking isn't an issue.

I think there's a good logic for our current setup even if it doesn't do everything for all situations. I like that I can operate my vehicle without a fob or extra technology

You can get hollow replacement for cases for a few bucks on ebay.

I do understand the logic towards hiding a key and used to do it. I guess I stopped doing it after never having used it on any vehicle

I hide a key where it isn't too easily accessible. I hide it out of sight. I hide it where it looks like I am checking for a leak or something of the sort so that if I need to use it people don't pay attention. I also don't open my door right away after getting it in case any one happens to be watching. and I don't put it back until later. I also have multiple hiding spots.

But like Alex said previously I still do my best at keeping my keys handy and in my pocket.
I do get spoiled with my 2004 Crown Victoria though. touch keypad on the door. though I do everything I can not to use that since the numbers can wear out through use and that wouldn't be good.

Under one of the fake air intakes at the base of the windshield would make a nice spot. Nice and dry and you don't have to lay down in the rain or snow to fetch the spare.

The only time this is ever a concern is when I go wheeling. My doors sometimes have the habit on locking without me noticing and I have locked the truck with the engine running. I keep my spare set in my pocket for times like that.

Whenever I get out of the vehicle when it's running I roll the window down

As sad as it is for me to admit it...I use the same trick!

That worked for me until I started leading trail runs and had to get out a lot to spot people

On that topic: How many times has your spotter jumped out of the shotgun seat...got you directed thru a tight spot on the trail...then damn near rip the door handle off trying to re-enter the passenger door? Yeah...TOO FREAKING MANY! Disabling the automatic door locks has always been a mod I would love to do. I think its absurd that GM took the time to design three separate modes that we can choose from...and none of them is "OFF".

Duh.

i do the same with every car, weather im working on it in the shop or im getting out to look at something. as long as the engine is running and im going to get out i hit the window button to roll it down. its a habit now!

One of the extra benefits of a stick. The manual is based on road speed (5mph, I think), instead of shift lever position. In GM's defense, I think that's actually a government regulation now to have auto locks. Remember, the government thinks we're too dumb to keep from falling out of our car without their help.
