Selling the Hummer

Well, with all the talk here recently about getting a new car/truck in place of the Hummer, got me thinking..

My old 06 has served me well and is still running strong with no issues, other than old age just like me...It has 75K miles on it right now..as some of you remember, I started the first HUMMER forum back in the day with Patrick on HF's and Dilo along with Mikey (Hummer Guy) were my sidekicks along with the many others now faded away and moved on from there over time..But I never let go of my Hummer...

But alas, I see an opportunity to sell it now when it is in good shape and would make an easy sell for top dollar.

My only Choice for me and it fits me well too like the H3, is the Toyota FJ Cruiser...

I don't like Jeeps, LR's(had one) or any other facsimile of a true offorader style vehicle..for the money the FJ works for me.

I have put together the option packages for the 2014 and also that is it's last year too for Toyota's FJ Cruiser...So I'm having a couple of dealers work on finding me one with all that I want in one..

Your thoughts and opinions are welcome....be kind to an old man now..

I also like the new Jeep Cherokees. First pics it looked awful but I think it look decent in person. Gets decent mpg as well. Most FJ owners seem to be happy with their purchase.

Actually wheeled with a FJ on several occasions and was impressed. Also met a valet that has one built very nicely. He's pretty cool and always jumps in the Hummer to park it. Pretty impressive what he has done with it

The FJ is about the only thing I would trade the h3 for right now. Maybe a Rubicon but the jeep thing is so played out. Although having endless parts would be nice.

Dennis, try to spend some time in an FJ before you decide.

They are not for everyone and lack some of the refinement you are accustom to.

Personally, I would keep the H3, make a few changes to freshen it up a bit then splurge like a mofo on a new daily driver.

Hate to see you let it go.

Aint many of us old timers/day one owners around any more.

Good luck.

Keep it. I don't see any reason to let a 75K truck in good shape go. At least not unless you are getting some kind of a deal on tradein that you can't pass up (which I doubt seeing recent pricing locally). I've never been a proponent of trading just for the sake of trading. But, as 3Hummers put it, it's your money and ultimately your decision. Good luck whichever way you go.

I'm with 08H3. You're only gonna get $8K to $12K for it on a trade-in, anyway. So you might as well keep it. Given the cost of a new SUV...you could completely build the hell out of your H3 for a fraction of that.

I do like the FJs but they are really un-comfortable on long trips. Interior and seats have never been Toyota's strong point.

I agree with Gunner. Go drive and ride in an FJ if you haven't. I wasn't impressed but there are a lot of them out there. Only you can decide what is right or you.

75k on an 06 is nothing. My 08 Alpha has 120k and besides typical wear n tear items it's doing awesome. My 07 with 77k is also doing great. Your H3 has a lot of life left in it no doubt.

You could totally fix everything on your H3 and still come out cheaper than having a new FJ with a monthly payment.

The FJ is a good 4x4, but it rides more like a Jeep as far as comfort goes. And the suicide doors are a p.i.t.a to get out of in a parking lot. I do like the TRD model, but at the time it only ran on 93 octane from what I remember and with gas prices = no thanks. I'd rather buy a low mileage 2010 Alpha H3 or Alpha H3T if I just had to have a car payment lol.

It is your $$$ though, so do what u feel is right.

Thanks for the feedback..much appreciated..

I am not completely sold on the FJ yet..I have driven one with all the Options and they are nice in a lot of respects..I liked the feel and handling..However I did notice it had some low grade interior fitments, like dash and knobs pieces all looked and felt chincy. The doors felt thin and light weight and closed without the solid sound, but I also am not, nor can anyone compare it to an H1 like 3hummers keeps eluding to (different league) ..But I am comparing it to my H3..and yes it seems to lack a lot of the refinement I have in the H3 like Gunner said..So the words of advice here are not falling on deaf ears...I will be considering all bits...

said it best I think and made me think twice now.....Thanks...Jury is still out

Bottom line with regards to my H3 and I hate to sound cliche'..But "There is nothing else Like it"

Whos gonna do all those tech write ups?? :gaah: LOL, enough of a reason to keep it.

I wish I had 70k on my 06. I will hit 120k after today.

Dennis if you will notice in my sig line I also have an H3. I have a little over 100K on the odometer on that truck. 2008 Alpha. Still going strong. We have looked at swapping it for something else a couple of times but never could find anything we liked more. Compared to an H1 almost everything is more comfortable/refined.

That's the big problem I'm having right now as I said..Nothing else like it...The more you guys chime in, the more you make me realize that I will never have the same driving pleasure as I have with the H3.

Well Sh!t..I'm already having buyer's remorse:sigh:

I've had 87-91 Mitsubishi Montero's, 94-04 Land Rover Range Rovers, Land Rover Discovery I/II's, Jeep Wranglers TJ/LJ, and finally a 04 Jeep Grand Cherokee. None of them are like the H3.

I took a huge gamble with my Alpha, I basically bought it sight unseen, had never driven an H3, and when I got up to that dealership 5.5HR away and saw it sitting there I was instantly in love with it. I love how they look, I like how they're laid out inside and out, I like how it handles, the monsoon stereo is great for a factory setup, and with my Alpha I love the V8!!

Nothing out there really compares to it. It's rugged where it needs to be like a Jeep, and then it's refined in places like a Land Rover. When the H3 first came out all I saw around Houston, TX were the DUB ones running around with 28's and chrome all over it (now I see the new Jeep Wrangler's looking the exact same vs being setup for off road), and that instantly turned me off of the H3. Then I saw one at a local Jeep dealership in the used car lot, and while my wife was working I looked it over from top to bottom (it was unlocked), and I was surprised at how well it was laid out in/out. Then my friend told me about the Alpha H3 a few years later and it got me curious enough to start looking at them.

Once I got the Alpha all my Jeep buddies instantly hated me, which I found totally silly since no matter what brand 4x4 we prefer we're all out having fun enjoying off roading, but to the new line of Jeep owners it's like you've betrayed them if you don't have a Smittybilt Catalog Jeep, with a silly custom name on the hood that never goes off road.....

When I wheeled my Montero's and my Land Rover's we were never biased towards just our brand 4x4. We were just happy to be out having fun. When I joined this forum the change from a Jeep forum was instant. No bashing, no name calling, just people helping each other with tech questions, and mods! I was so happy to be an H3 owner I sold my dad's 05 LJ and my 04 Grand Cherokee for my wife's 07 H3 Adventure!!

We're both happy and my wife loves her H3. I honestly don't miss owning a Jeep at all. I truly enjoy this forum and I look forwards to years of H3 ownership and I am sad that the Hummer brand isn't back, but I hope that one day it will be. To me our H3's will one day be an American Classic 4x4 like the Bronco.

Not sure if you know or not, but the FJ is ending its production. 2014 is the last model year for it.

My '3 is my favorite vehicle I've owned hands down. I look online and find shops that take a JK, add most popular wheeling mods, sell them for 60k or more. Nice? Yah! But I ask myself is that built JK any more capable than what I have? Maybe, but probably not by much. My only hangup is GM dumping Hummer and what happens with parts availability. Almost x2, I wanted a Pontiac G8! Anyway, this is another vote for you to keep it :)

Is it your daily driver? Make it a project/vacation one. All the things you want to do won't be pressed by getting it done by Monday. Besides, parts are almost a dime-a-dozen since it is a GM with so much aftermarket support for its kissing cousin the Colorado/Canyon/Trailblazer/blah blah blah. I think you will have more sellers-remorse than buyers-remorse if you go to the FJ.

There's an FJ in our SAR 4x4 group - and here are my impressions based on that:
1) the H3 carries more people and gear than an FJ
2) Super unleaded, really? (granted, I have the same criticism about my D2 - but I'm fixing that with a diesel)
3)ever person (and there have been dozens) who have ridden in my H3 after riding in a FJ comment about how cheap the FJ feels

but the opinion you're moving on - that you can build a lot cheaper than buy - is so true.

With that said, I drove an 06 in 06 and thought they were gutless; so I didn't buy one. I drove an 07 at the model year change (when they were giving them away - paid 32k for a 43k list h3) and bought it..... upgrading to an 07 or newer IMO would be a wise choice. With that said, there's been renaissance in H3s and the prices have started to climb a bit. I paid 18k for my 08 Alpha with 78k miles, now I couldn't touch one for less than 23k.

I, like you, am not enamored with Jeeps, I figure that they really aren't decent vehicles until you change everything but the sheet metal.... they need honest competition again otherwise, we'll be looking fondly back at those awesome-build-quality YJs
