hood handles

Hi guys, I hope I don't get flamed here but I tried some searching and didn't see what I was looking for. Does anybody know how long of a screw I would need to bolt my hood handles through the hood. I have a set of the SMA black billit handles but the screws are for just bolting through the plastic louver. I was going to stop and get some screws on my way home from work so I could start on the project when I get home instead of drilling, measuring to find out and then have to go get them. Thanks for any help.

Don't worry about getting flamed, it's your Hummer build it like you want. If it keeps the louver on and you don't have them doober dobber adhesive all over under it you will have the option to paint of wrap or whatever you want.
Sorry I can't find all that at the moment. Do your handles have threaded studs now?
The billet set I got had them and I removed them, bought some bolts to go up from the inside of the hood into the handles.
Don't use the instructions as where to place them. You have to be carefull so your bolts are on the flat part of the braces for one or it will end up on the edge.
If you have to wait, take the handle somewhere and thread a nut on it so you can see what size the and thread the bolt is so you can get some the right size and not strip out the threads. I used PBblaster on mine and let them soak so the threaded shafts would come out. I used SS bolts and coated them with anti-seize so I could remove them if needed. I have always though about painting my hood flat back at some point to kill the white from reflecting my roof lights.
I will see if I can find a picture and that info but I see your post was at 9:19 so might not happen in time.

Thanks Hunner, I work nights so I will be stopping on my way home in the morning. the handles I have are threaded and bolts are intended to screw in from under the louver. They are 14mm long so I didnt know how much longer I needed so I had enough to seat into the handle but not to long where I have to add a bunch of washers under the hood and a have so much hanging down from under the hood. hopefully mock up for drilling won't be to bad and I dont end up with extra holes on the hood making sure I'm on flat edges.

I got mine used from Gunner. They are billet steel and heavy and pricey at the time. These were chrome but I media blasted them, sprayed them with textured black and stuck them in the oven at 250 for 20-30 minutes. Smells funny but the food tastes the same!
They might be hard to find now. I have not looked. Check "teaka toys" they have sma but a flatter style. Mine have finger grooves on the underside, like I need that but they look good.

After I said that I thought I should check those screws anyway. I ran thru some salt water back then and I see the white stuff in that picture where it dried. So I pulled them and put more anti-seize on them. The billets being aluminum and the screw being SS have a bit of electrolysis or corrosion between the dissimilar metal so I coated them. Salt water did not help.
I had some problems on mine when I first got them since they had been around and when I tried to pull the threaded studs one broke and I had to drill and tap.
The bolts that are on the braces are from under the head to end 1 5/8.
The one on just the sheet metal one was 1 1/8 and the other was 1 inch because I had less depth.
That would get you close and grind off or add washers. I used 1 washer on each bolt.
I lined mine up along the outer edge of the louver. Hope that helps. I had held off getting these as they really don't do anything since our hoods open from the front. When the recall came out I figured I would just thru bolt it but happened on a deal so what the heck?

I gave a set of the OEM black plastic ones to Zach. Not sure if he has any use for them but I wanted them out of my garage. I also have a set of billet aluminum somewhere. They may be at the shop in Texas.

If anyone is interested in trying to get them to work on a H3, let me know. They are off of a H2.

Well I stopped on my home this morning and took a guess at 1.5 and 2, 1.5 for not on brace and 2 for on brace. When I did the project they were a little long and had to add a few washers to both. Also the black billet SMA handles I got were on Ebay NIB for 130 and I got them for 100. They took my first offer so you might be able to get them a lil cheaper, I think they had one pair left. Thanks again Hunner for your advise, I got really close to not getting on a flat spot on the brace so I'm sure if I just used the template I would have been on an angle.

I got the SMA Chrome handles at a Ford dealer for $38.00. Sand Blasted them myself (that chrome peeled off way too easy), primed with a Dupli-Color Self-Etching Primer, painted with Plasti-Kote Anti-Rust Enamel: Item# 361 Semi Gloss Black (hard to find good stuff).

Yep.... at a local Ford parts dept....., they were sitting in the corner with a set of the SS Manik Rock Rails still in the unopened box (I gotta get off my ass sell them damn things) with a sign that said make offer, so I had to ask. Story was something about a guy used to work there, bought them from a supplier at the dealer discount.... yada yada, he don't work here no more and never paid for them.

So I said I'll give ya $25 for the handles. He says how bout $50, I say nope, but I'll do $38. He says you gotta take the rails too, so do $100 for both and get that chit out of here. Yeah, once in a while you fall into it. :wink:

IIRC JeepEaterH3 from HF had OEM hood handles off an H2. Also the owner of the Rochester Hummer Club had OEM H2 hood handles. I think that was posted on Elcova.

I am referring to the OEM / factory plastic hood handles from the H2. They have a stud vs bolts like the aftermarket ones. I think there are quite a few out there designed just for the H3 and won't fit and H2 (SMA for example). They are designed specifically for looks as they are not functional.
