Hi guys, I hate to bring it up but I have done a lot of searching but still looking for some feedback from the pros. I have the 3.7 engine and lookin at getting 35" tires. I don't have any performance mods done and I won't be doing any in the near future, bought a fixer up house and all my money is going into that. I really need to get tires because they are getting really big dry rot bumps. My big question is what can I expect for performance after putting the 35"s on, will I basically lose overdrive, towing ability, accelerating and passing power. I used to have a 06 coloroado with the 3.5 and 3.75 rear, will it be similar to this after adding the 35"s. I don't need a rocket ship but I also don't want a moped. sorry for the question but I can't seem to find descriptive review of performance after adding the 35". Thanks for any help.

Very simply expressed, yes.

Buy your desired tire in 285 and spend the money on your home. Your home will not go down in value.

IMHO, the 3.5/3.7 are strongest in producing torque. The overall size of the final thing that goes "round and round" will impact your torque. I am interested in performance not the "mall-crawl cool effect."

Plus a 37" tire is going to cost more $$$ over a 265 or a 285.

Just my opinion.

You will be fine with a 35" tire. There are many members on here with 35" tires. I had 35" tires on my last h3. I still could pass people fine and I had to pull many trailers with my last h3.

The h3 is not a race car to start with. It does fine for what it is. I was getting 17-18 MPG when I first got mine. The last two tanks of gas I checked I got 15 MPG. My wife just said it got 13. I have no complaints. Her biggest complaint is with the cruise set at 55 it goes in and out of overdrive. I just put it in 3rd to stop the up and down shifting.
Working on the tuning now. Running 35's with a roof rack, winch, bumper, full size spare, ect.

I have 35 but it is not a daily driver. If it was daily I would stick with 33s. Most folks I have offroader with that have 33 have done fine with all but deep water holes. And their gas mileage is better.

35's basically make 4th gear what 5th was before.

If you wheel a lot I think it's worth going to 35's... if you're on the road mostly I don't think I'd do it.

hi guys, thanks for the replys. i guess I should explain myhummer use. I am more of a overlander, camper and hunter. I am not as much intothe 4x4 offroad parks just because we don't have many around here. At somepoint I will be getting a offroad trailer unless my wife gets her way and windup with a more comfort camper. The benifet of an extra inch of clearence wouldcome in handy that is why I am looking at the 35 vs the 33, I'm just concernedthat I may lose all power. I dont mind getting a mile or two less of gas mileageas long as its close to the mid teens like 14 or 15. I'm just concerned that ifI have to run in 3rd all the time I wont be close to that in mileage. I kno Ikno I bought a hummer not a prius but I don't want 10mpg either

I really think you'd enjoy 33's.

They look nice, have plenty of meat of them for when you do go offroad & air down, but the power difference from 33 to 35 is pretty big IMO... on less than "technical terrain" I think you'd be happy you stuck with 33's. (also way cheaper, which is sure never a bad thing)

See... exactly the consensus you were hoping for:giggle:

Where you from in cheeseland anyhow?

If you're anywhere near the rugged & technical terrain of the Baraboo bluffs... you'll likely need 37's... just to be safe:wink:

-Keep in mind, you only gain 1/2" in offroad clearance when going up one inch in tire size.

-The loss in perceptive power when jumping from a 33" to a 35" is very subjective. Not a coincidence that most folks that complain about the lack of power in the H3/I5 are those with larger tires.

-Also consider the added rolling weight, and thus the added wear that larger tires have on the brakes, and front end/steering components which are barely adequate(at best) for handling 33's offroad.

Anyone care to share their 35 experience with vs. without a PCM tune? I'm also in the 33/35 decision mode, but would plan on a PCMforless tune.

I dont get it, I had 35" super swamper trxxs mtrs and I also ran 315 dunlop mud rovers maxx traction. I wheeled my h3 hard but also put on 50,000 miles. Why is everyone so afraid to make the little leap. Only about 1% of h3 owners will actually wheel on terrain that is so technical and demanding that they would have broken less parts with a 33" tire and that percent probably needs 35s for that little extra clearance. If your going to wheel hard enough to break stuff then you are going to break things regardless of what tire size you are running. 35's are not some crazy big tire. They are at most 2" taller. My current h3 is bone stock with factory tires and I have worn the steering rack bushing out faster than my last h3 that had 35's. Its hit or miss with these vehicles.

Just buy the 35's and be done with it. You will love the look and barely notice the difference in performance once you get used to them.

Honestly, I didn't notice much of a performance loss from 265's to 305's and the 305's to 315's. Maybe it would have been more noticeable if I went from a 32" straight to a 35" but honestly the drivability isn't terrible.

I can only speak to the v8. The folks I have talked to with i5 do great offroader with 35 but talk about slow hill climbs on interstates

I am also facing this decision this fall. Originally went from 265's to 285's. Added a GM performance air intake, and find it very driveable. Am off exactly .3 mph at 70 (per the GPS). Gas mileage is 17-18 on the highway. My primary offroad consideration is snow. It is my favorite medium to "wheel" in and the H3 3.5 excells in my view.

Debating the 305x70 vs the 315x75. This is a logic and emotion debate. Logic says that the 305x70(33") is the correct choice. Emotion says the "cool factor" of the 315x75(35") is too great to pass up - meaning every 4x4 I'm drawn too on the street has 35's or larger. The 315x75 I am considering is actually a 34.6" tire. based on my percentage calculations, the increase from 33" to 34.6" is about 5% meaning to me a 5% loss in performance by going to 35"s. Not much in my view and well worth the "look" provided. That said, I have wheeled some remote wilderness areas with rock, tree falls, water crossings, mud, snow, hill climbs, etc with the 285's and completed all trails. From an offroad performance standpoint, I am completely confident that the 305x70 (or 285x75) is enough for all my wheeling needs AND better matched for daily highway driving. It simply is a matter of appearance as any additional performance advantage of the larger radius or ground clearance is off set by the 5% loss in torque, mpg, etc.

305(285) is the logical decision. 315's are the emotional one (if driving a 3.5L).

Both of these trucks (white and blue) are running 285x75 33's. Evidence that 33's will get the job done.

Just as a heads up, i am running the 265's and do just fine when wheeling. Sure I've clipped my trailer hitch more than those with bigger tires and scraped my belly but they work just fine...so far. Ill def get 315's the next time since power is no issue for me.

I have 33s, not 35s, but I've never been of the opinion that the PCM tune gave me more power but it provided better driveabililty. The biggest thing for me was improving the shift points and hardness.

With my roof rack and other mods my truck has a hard enough time maintaining the speed limit out here of 75. Heck, it sometimes has problems with 65, and it has a lot of problems with hills. I chose not to go with 35s on my truck so as not to further exacerbate the already existing issues.

I go back & forth between my two sets of wheels/ tires... and the difference here is HUGE. The stock tires (32?) make the h3 a regular vehicle... driveable, decent, can use cruise...

put the 35's on... that disappears. I have to use 3rd going up any hill (I'm a 5 speed) I top out at 60 on any kind of incline, I'm having to hammer on it even on the flats to get up to 70. Driving to Moab is a painful endeavor, even in the low parts of the drive in UT. The hills on the interstate in UT break my cruise control... almost all of them, unless I've got a big tailwind.

I'm at elevation, so obviously this isn't typical for all... but around here the difference is unreal. If I could wheel the stuff I do with 33's... I would.

If I lived in Kansas where the changes in elevation is measured in inches in would be on 35s. In AZ I'm driving up and down large elevation gains all the time. Here to Payson is from 1000' to 6000'. Going to Big Lake adds another 3000'. Unfortunately this climbing isn't linear as you climb to 3000, drop to 1500, climb to 4000, drop again, etc. My truck cannot maintain speed on these hills without going to 2nd gear and 6000 rpm

I think the decision is very situational and personal and you just gotta see what works for you.

Yeah... obviously him being in cheeseland, he won't see the elevation like we do. He might live near Merrill though... and have to travel near Tim's hill, the highest point in WI... 1860 or so!!! Crazy big climbs in that part of WI!!:)

Hi everybody, thanks for the replys. Had internet issuesyesterday so couldn’t get on line. Yeah here in cheeseland we don’t have 15minute treks up an incline, ours are just bluffs. I just didn’t know if I put35’s on, overdrive would be usless on flat or every little change in incline. Also didn’t know how it wud be with a off road trailer. Most of the trips withtht wud be from 5 to 12 hour drives one way with interstate travel being halfthat. I guess it was hit on the head that the logical choice is 33’s but theemotional one is 35’s. even with that I still feel like a prom girl tryin topick out a prom dress.
