Sorry, but you have to be 21 to carry our purchase a handgun. Stupid, I know, since you can carry a gun and die for our military at 17-18, but not good enough to have your own. That's Fed logic for you!

Depends on the state Kyle lives in!

Twenty one years to purchase a handgun from a license firearms dealer! Does not mean an 18 year old cannot be gifted a handgun by a parent or issued a handgun by an authorized LE agency. The Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968 (aka Gun Control Act) set the minimum age to purchase a handgun from an FFL at 21 years of age. It did not state how old a person could be to legally carry a handgun, that was left up to the states.

In Utah, 18-20 year olds can legally be in possession of a handgun, and it is also legal for a private sale to an 18-20 year old, so long as the seller did NOT intentionally purchase the handgun from a dealer with the intention of selling it to the minor. (So, if I purchased a handgun a year ago, and now attempt to sell it, I can sell it to an 18 year old UTAH RESIDENT. I cannot sell it out of state to a person under 21 since that wold involve a licensed dealer.) That does not mean a parent of other relative cannot purchase a handgun as a gift for a person 18-20 years old. It is totally legal, and is not a straw purchase per Federal Law. (It could be against some state's law..I believe it was in DE where Mrs. Sarah Brady got in slight trouble for purchasing a rifle for her son. Yes, that is the Sarah Brady who is extremely anti-gun.)

Utah Code:76-10-509.9 Sales of Firearms to Juveniles



(1) A person may not sell any firearm to a minor under 18 years of age unless the minor is accompanied by a parent or guardian.
(2) Any person who violates this section is guilty of a third degree felony.

I know of at least one state, Indiana, that issues concealed weapon permits to 18 year old citizens of the state. If that person is gifted a handgun by his parents or other relatives they can legally carry that weapon in MOST states that accept Indiana permits. (Note: there might be a state that recognizes or has reciprocity with Indiana that might exclude those under 21 with a permit to carry...not sure. I do know TN at one time back in the mid 2000 had it on the table.)

INDIANA CODE: IC 35-47-2-3
(g) A license to carry a handgun shall not be issued to any person who:
(1) has been convicted of a felony; (2) has had a license to carry a handgun suspended, unless the person's license
has been reinstated;
(3) is under eighteen (18) years of age;

In addition, the State of MI, which registers handguns, allows 18 year old citizens of the state to register a handgun legally gifted to them, or brought into the state from another state, when moving to MI. (Michigan codes: MCL 28.422 & 28.429) Also, at one time, PA allowed 18 and up to own handguns. There are probably a lot more states out there.

Not sure officially. I filled out the app two years ago, finally pushing through with it. I will follow up post with the decision. As 3hummers stated, Kern County is one of the more pro gun counties in the state.

Orange county in CA has become pretty much impossible since Sheriff Hutchens took over. She not only won't give any CCW's out, but won't renew those that are expiring. Hope to try getting one here in Riverside county to go with my Utah one. Since Commiefornia doesn't recognize it.

Here in California you have to be 18 to apply for your CCW but 21 to buy a handgun, so i could just be gifted one buy my parents! i think!

I am pretty sure you have to have an address in the county you apply for a CCW in for CA. Since I am on my Way out of this hell hole I wouldn't even bother trying in CA. Have my UT CCW and have submitted all my info, course work etc for my Texas CCW.

Just got back from Hawaii today and found my letter, I was denied on the grounds of insufficient GC statement. I cannot appeal, I would need to do that within 10 days in writing, and I was on vacation. I can try again in one year, or say screw it and move to Arizona! :)
