2/4 Band is Shot in my 2009 H3T

I have a 2009 H3T I just bought about 6 months ago, only 130k miles. It stopped going into 2nd and 4th gear, just goes from 1st to 3rd. Took it to the shop and they said the solenoids are working fine, they even actuated them with their tool while I was there and could hear them, they said the only other options is the 2/4 band is bad and it needs a full $3500 (minimum) rebuild.

Just looking for advice and to see if that is a reasonable price or if I should look at getting a rebuilt one and if that would be cheaper. I wished I could have at least paid it off before it broke.

I had been fixing small issues I found like the camshaft position sensor and the VVT solenoid as well as replacing the secondary air injection pump all in the last month or so. Then this happened.

Not sure what they are doing for that price? If a full rebuild? Seems like a fair price for a full rebuild on a 4L60 transmission. Not sure what state you’re in but in California it will cost a bit more, just due to costs of everything in this state. I had Valley Transmission rebuild my 4L60 in my Chevy Silverado and it was around $4300. But with that I got their valve body shift kit, billet oil pump, new torque converter and everything else you would do in a rebuild, plus a great warranty. Also I highly suggest you use a shop that is part of ATRA.(Automatic transmission rebuilders association) This gives you a 4 or 5 year prorated warranty from the ATRA that is supported Nationwide and in Canada.

So if you’re on a road trip and your transmission fails. It will be towed (under warranty) to the closes ATRA approved shop for repair.

Again a shop that belongs to ATRA is probably going to cost a bit more, but atleast you know they are a qualified shop and you have the protection of the ATRA if you have issues.

Here you can find a ATRA shop near you.

150k on a 4L60e is about it. They just don’t seem to be very durable. I just had one rebuilt and upgraded in a 2006 H3…$3300.

I’ve got another H3 with 152k and it seems to have some harsh shifting issues.

Welcome fellow Mitten Dweller!

Call Fred (senior or junior) at Midway Transmission in Roseville. Get a price from them, that is where mine will be going when it is time. ;)

I look at it as an opportunity for some aftermarket upgrades, like Beast Sunshell etc...

$3500 is standard rate. Hope that includes a torque converter.

If possible, have them install heavy duty parts on it while they're in there.

Maybe ante up for a 6L80E from True Blue:

You can buy rbld kits. I've rebuilt a few trannys (first when I was 16). They never failed on me. If you have strong DIY and mechanical skills, ...you ought to be able to do it. There's a lot of stuff in there for sure, but books/manuals show how to do it, but if you've rebuilt a couple engines, it's certainly do-able. It'll cost you a lot of time to rebuild (the first time) and you'll have to buy a few special tools.

So when you figure the cost of your time, parts, and everything else, a shop that does a great job is the better way to go. Make sure they install all 'updates' to the tranny. Those are 'fixes' which others have figured out over time which remove most of the 'known' weak points.

Let us know what you did and how it went 👍
