So, I have been going through some serious stuff in my personal and work life lately, leaving very little time for Hummer related events. I am writing this only to let the members know why I have not been participating much lately. This is NOT intended to be a "feel sorry for me" post. It will however provide me a means of venting a bit.

Back in May on Mother's Day, I had just driven home from Flagstaff to attend a friend's graduation ceremony at NAU. I got in around 8:00 that night. I called my mother to wish her a happy MD only to be told that my dad was in the hospital in ICU for a heart attack that happened two days prior. Knowing that my parents normally tell me not to worry, I drove to the hospital directly to see my dad. They had him stabilized and doing well. I told that I was going home to go bring mom over since she is unable to drive. Unfortunately when I got to the house, I found her passed away.

My brother came into town to help me get things squared away at the house. We got things squared away within a week. The house was close to looking like a something from that show Hoarders. We got dad back home and back into the groove of life. He had a stent put in last month and is doing well. He is actually looking forward to going wheeling again now that he has been cleared for higher altitudes.

Well, I wish this is where the drama ends . . . not even close . . .

About two weeks after this mess, My mother-in-law, Gloria, gets a call from New York. Her sister was dying from cancer. Gloria caught a flight out the next day. A few days later, we get a call from Gloria. She had been unable to get hold of my father-in-law, Art. Ellen and I drove over and noticed his car was not there. We drove by all his usual places and could not find it. I decided we needed to go in the apartment and see if we could find any clues. Well, we found Art on the floor in the bathroom. Apparently there all night. It was currently 1:00 in the afternoon. We were still trying to figure out where the car was wwhen Ellen found a note on the table under his keys. Apparently, the cops brought him home drunk and he fell in the bathroom.

We called for an ambulance to take him to the ER since he hurt himself pretty bad that night from the fall. Turned out he also had a pretty bad urinary tract infection. We had to call Gloria, causing her to catch a flight back. You can imagine this was not going to be a good time. Art was in-and-out of the hospital for other things. He also had a 12mm kidney stone causing some issues. After about the third time of going to the ER, Gloria started having issues walking and had to go in the ER herself. Turned out she had a weird disease that impacted her leg muscles.

Ellen took a leave of absence from her job to help take care of her parents. They worked as on-site managers for an apartment complex, which Ellen and I had to take over during all this mess. We had one apartment getting revamped and another being evicted. I would head over after work every day to help out where I could.

Eventually, Art would also have more issues. We believe he had a mini stroke. He lost his ability to walk so back in the hospital he went. A few days later, Gloria would be heading back in from having anxiety issues. Turned out that they would be in the same room at the hospital for a while.

Ellen and decided that we need to get her parents out of the management business and into an assisted care facility. Fortunately, Ellen's sister and her husband came into to town to assist with the move. Good thing since I was having issues managing Art since he is now getting Alzheimer's. He is kinda a rude guy to begin with but now add memory problems with it. I had to round up all the firearms and car keys to keep him and others safe. We also had to really thin out their belongings since the new place was small. We also had to move during the heat wave. Most places here in Torrance do not have air conditioning so the 95+ temperatures were brutal. Also, Art did not adjust very well to the new place. Ellen and I were called regularly for the first two weeks due do Art flipping out on the staff. It was onyl recently that after a very tense fight that he is now accepting the new place.

So, now add all my work issues . . .

Those of you that work in IT, the market is flooded with companies looking for talent with Linux/UNIX and VMWare. Well, many of my coworkers left for "greener pastures", leaving me with all their tasks. In the mean time, I have been working with my management to hire more people, but the flood of Linux/UNIX jobs has made it difficult to bring in an advanced system administrator. Now we will have to bring in someone less experienced and train in house. I also support a flying testbed (727 converted into a flying datacenter) so I spend time there as well. Oh, I am one of a couple people that know multilevel operating systems.

With all this going on, I am also trying to find time to make needed repairs on the Hummer. I blew the front differential and had some power issues with the engine. Also add on that I am looking to buy a house. Somewhere between Mother's Day and the incident with Art, we had put an offer on a place and started escrow. Well, our inspector found the attic was infested with rats and had a roof leak, adding too much money to the cost of the house so we pulled out. I guess it was a good thing since we would have been moving at the same time we moved Ellen's parents.

I hope the everyone, particularly the SoCal group, understands my predicament and is patient while I get my life back in order. I am looking forward to getting back on the trails and enjoying the outdoors a bit. I miss the all the comradery!

Also, feel free to ask questions about anything you read here. I had to learn the hard way on how to handle many of these events. I had no idea about all the laws that are entailed when a person dies in a house. I was forced to make several hard decisions about my mother on my own. Also, there are some great resources to get help when having to find a home for those that need extra care.

Well that is enough to keep a platoon of people busy. Sorry for all the troubles Craig. Glad your dad is doing well, he is a cool guy. As for the IT troubles I would think that with all of the U S tech companies laying off their American workers in favor of cheaper " imported " workers that there might be some talent available. Not my field so not sure. In my business there is a huge shortage of quality labor. Apparently the younger or newly " Imported " workers don't share the same attitude about hard work or values of the previous waves that washed over our borders. In short they suck. Hope to see you soon.

Dang man, sorry to hear about all of this. It will all turn around, and although it may seem dark, there's a silver lining in there somewhere.

Little late to this, but Craig, really feel what you have gone through and can relate in a sense. . Have had my roller coaster as well. Some here know, most don't. **** I have to deal with, family on my side in the past two years. It's a ****ing battle! Just the loss is an ass kicker, but the mindset after, harder. You know I lost my aunt, deal with that and trust and money, gets me sideways. Deal today with it. Then Chris and his deal, many times talking with him. It's extremely hard losing family. Been through so much loss on my moms side, can count family on one hand. Told you before, let's grab a bite. Think it might help. Wheeling, yeah! Fun! But what we have established through it? Think a few of us are more like a family. We gotta lot of love for each other. Just hit us up, know I'll be there for you for a talk[emoji41]

Hey Craig, I know what you are going through.... The last year and half for me has been a complete roller coaster, with many similar issues, deaths in the family, my old man getting a stent in his aorta, which we caught in the literal nick of time. Grandmother passing away causing family members to turn on each other, work drama, etc. I went from having a secure job and savings to having to burn through everything to keep afloat and was reduced to living out of a car for a bit. It's amazing how fast things can change on a dime despite how much you plan ahead, and then you spend all your time juggling knives. Work turned into a 3 ring circus, and my savings got wiped out while trying to keep everything together... and then try to put a happy smile on to make everyone else thinks everything is ok...

I'll say this... cancer and Alzheimer's is the devil. And it's hard to deal with, it's so important to have wills/estate plans done in advance, seems so easy in hind sight, but I've seen first hand what happens. I've seen family members turn into monsters as others waste away in front of your eyes. Assisted care is a whole other can of worms I had to deal with...

After dealing with all this, you have to sit back and take stock of things. I'm getting stuff sorted out, and I'm planning to be back soon [months] starting my own business. At least on that end I can be the master of my destiny rather than dealing with corporate bull**** from the wrong side. It'll give me more family time and that's whats more important for now... for me at least.

Hang in there dude...

Thanks for the wishes everyone! Just got some more news last night. My sister's husband has been losing muscle mass in his left arm for the last few months. Turns out he was diagnosed with ALS. :sigh:

I am hanging in there. I am having a deeper appreciation for life. All these events are getting me to plan for my inevitable end and allowing me appreciate the smaller things in life.

Yeah, I know. I have a diff in the back of the H3 waiting for some attention. I just need to clean out the garage a bit so I have a place to work. I have boxes full of stuff from the in-laws place kinda in the way.

Craig, I'm sorry to hear about what you've been going through. Your too young to be going through all this and yet your strength will get you through it. Take the personal time you need when you can.
When I retired six years ago I had all kind of plans and my full-time job wound up administering my mother's estate. I couldn't do that and work too so I know how difficult things can be. Throw serious illnesses with family members and a lot of hospital visits quadruples your challenges so I know.
Hang in there Buddy!

Hopefully things turn around for you soon and the light at the end of the tunnel doesn't turn out to be a train. It is always difficult to loose someone close to you and we certainly all have our issues and challenges in life. It almost never seams like we are dealt a fair hand to play, but the magic of life is that anyone can turning that bad hand of cards into to a winner. You just have to see the good through the bad. This forum is made up of a phenomenal group of members who share more than a bond over a common interest such as Hummers, wheeling and general outdoor activities and its comforting to know that we have the support and strength of this fellowship to help us through our various times of need.

I don't usually share much online about my personal life, because I never want people to feel sorry for me and my family. But I may have shared this with some of you before. My two boys have a rare genetic disorder that has yet to be classified by medical science, cerebral palsy is the closest thing it relates to and it affects my youngest son the most, at 5 years old he lacks the fine motor control to walk without assistance and the lack of fine motor skills also prevents him from being able to talk. Over the years, my wife and I have tried to find the reason as to why we were given these challenges or why we were being punished with the burden of this disability. It took a long time for me and my wife to get over that train of thought and focus on what really matters, the happiness of our family and our children. Everyday will continue to have its challenges, but I can can always promise them that no matter what happens, they are going to be happy and live life to the fullest extent possible.

The reason I shared that is because it has opened my eyes to the special needs community and the genuine lack of services that exist to help families cope with the daily complexities of life for those of use who are faced with these challenges. My wife and I have become a strong advocates for facilities and services that support the special needs community and it has given me a sense of focus and purpose for something that I was completely oblivious before I had kids. It took me to go through some serious personal struggle before I could find my strength.

Since its Friday, I feel like raising a glass to each of you. Cheers brothers.

Thanks Big! I have a coworker who's mother is going to need care. Fortunately, everything is fresh in my mind so I have been able to help him right now. I can totally relate to helping someone learn from my experiences.
