What would you build for a DD?

average cost of a new car is $30,000. If you had 30k to build a DD (including purchase price) - what would you build?

... and my only issue with the trailblazer and similar is the differential through the oil pan issue (makes it hard to lift)....

You could even use the prospective purchase price, for example, my wife wanted a new, diesel powered X5 - at 65,000.... uh, no.... so she's getting a completely redone LR2 (yeah, I'm an idiot, but I'm a happy one).... but at 65k, I can gut and use nothing but the chassis/body and have a better vehicle....

so what will your next car be?

I wonder if I could get an aftermarket '69 camaro body, have it mounted on a c6 corvette chassis, and get it painted and the interior done for less than 30K......

Going the 4x4 route, probably a Tacoma. If I was going the fast route, a Nissan 370z. That's if I had the money. Both cost under 30k, however the taco is a lot more practical than the nissan. Or maybe a Chevy Tahoe if possible.

The last car I built for a daily driver was a 68 Chevelle ss 396 4 speed car. I ran it with a 355rear so I could run down the highway at 70 all day long and get about 14 mpg. It was a blast.

I wouldn't mind building a classic with modern mechanicals, but with our roads being ****ty up here 7-9 months a year I think I would prefer to build something with long travel suspension and tonnes of HP!... you know for those pot holes at high speeds! haha

I would want the ultimate sleeper. Buy a clean body grandma car like a buick lesabre or a chevy cavalier for 5k then use the 25k in redoing the suspension, frame bracing and a 6.2l v8 supercharged with a 6l80e, ford 9in rear end.

Then go out and smoke all the camaros and mustangs.

Toyota Corolla. Don't laugh. Done it already and 30 mpg. Paid 2k, kept miles off the 2. Got totaled. And got paid 5k for it. Throw it in the gutter and buy another. The other 28k. Go through the 2 with some. Stash the rest for trips and breakage.

Hate to say it, but I want something kinda boring - my mod $ are giong to the Hummer. Mods and building a vehicle up seems to bring on the need to spend more money on the same vehicle, and I want a no brainer vehicle. The H3 is enough for me to keep going. I would probably get a used GTI for $30K, or an A3 TDI.

I'm seriously leaning toward an Isuzu V-cross. There's just something so funky about these ugly things. They have the proportions a cartoon car! Still...for a buy-here, pay-here daily driver, I think this thing is beyond cool..

Parts? Fahgetaboutit...only a few thousand of em here in the states. MPG?...probably high teens.

Hmm... not sure if I'm sticking to the OP's intent here but.... my DD is a bone stock VW Passat TDI. It's roomy, has a great sound system, a torquey engine, great transmission (DSG) and gives fantastic mileage
