I am wonder, what is the tip over increase w/ the Rancho lift. I think w/out we are at about 40% grade...I do want one, of course and a rear locker. Just wonderin

There is certainly an added risk by raising the CG.... But I think the effects are offset a little by having to run a wider stance... I know this holds true with the use of stock wheels or other 16" rims. Not sure if you have to run wider backspacing on 17s as well. But with stock wheels and 1.75" spacers you're almost equal in height to width gains. I'm sure there is some big mathematical equation to figure it out and that's way above my head. Lol

Great question. I was VERY VERY concerned with this. I would question the COG setup on a daily basis before I made the leap. I added a 4in rancho lift and 1.75in spacers to a stock H3 rim. I would say it was a wash, or even more stable after the spring over and disconnecting sway bars.

Ive had my rancho lift in the 45+ range and 30+ range side side on my inclinometer. I think a rancho kit is a HUGE increase in performance. With a long wheelbase compared to jeeps the added clearance is very welcome.

If you look at one of the videos on the "what have you done with your H3 recently" thread, you can see that I was at least at a 40* angle with the rancho kit and I was fine.

If you go up 4", you need to go wider 4" on each side to balance that! (From an engineering perspective).
For rancho H3s, If you take into account the new backspacing/spacer width and increase in tire width, an H3 gets 2.75" wider on each side (at least) and some ppl run wider. As a result you dont lose that much tip over angle (and 40% stock is probably a conservative number in the first place)

Other than a few minor issues...I honestly cannot say anything bad about the Rancho. It increases performance in every category....except price. $2400 plus new wheels is tough to swallow. The worst part of the entire kit is the Rancho shocks. They totally blow. Just get the base RS shocks...run em for a year and replace them.

I 100% agree with 4speedfunk. These shocks are junk.

Keep the OEM leaf springs as well and do the SOA when funds are available or your Rancho spring sag (they will sag after your second wheeling trip)...

Well 40% grade is highly conservative and only equates to about a 21.8 degree angle and those of us with inclinometers know we have grossly exceeded this number without issue. I personally have been slightly over 35 degrees, and the H2 is still very stable at that angle, so I suspect an H3 with a Rancho kit would behave similarly. So I would not be to concerned about tip over, most people never come close to tipping because you butt, gut, and brain will stop you way before you come close to tipping. Your biggest enemy in off camber situations is if you allow weight to transfer too quickly, i.e. sudden drop or sudden stop while your off camber, the momentum could carry you over.

The bigger risk from raising the CG is the huge increase in roll force for street driving; when swerving at 40 mph to miss a cat, if you get t-boned at a light, or a blow-out at 70. Also, AT tires have big squishy sidewalls and added track width from tread width does little for roll stability unless you also have large pimp wheels. If you look at offroad rollovers, it's often a rear tire sidewall collapse that initiates a roll when going over a shelf or up a bank.

When Chris did the Rancho lift, we did see his rear wheels leave the ground a bit when he tapped the brakes on a steep decent in LCC:

You can also see the rear lifted quite a bit on his decent of Pucker Hill in LCC:

I think some of this is exaggerated a bit. I don't recall when Chris put in the Alpha torsion bars. I have noticed a lot less dipping of the nose on my truck ever since I put them in myself.

I guess chris won't miss a chance to lift his rear for a camera!

I put in my alpha torsions after the winch. The rear springs are soft and flexy lol my new springs are not nearly as worn as my old ones.

That's good stuff there. Honestly, I was thinkin side to side. I was not thinkin up an down. Alpha T bars makes things better w/ the lift or even w/out...
