The Trip that wasn't!

Had a long weeknd recently and although the weather wasn't looking flash, using the old bushies rule of thumb that if you keep going west, eventually the rain will stop...you might be in the middle of the desert, but the rain will stop.

Decided to visit Welford National Park which is approx 900kms (560 miles for the funny talkers) west of Brisbane and because the weather was a looking bit dodgy, we monitored the weather and whether the park was open, very closely.

The trip from Brisbane to Chearleville was Ok except for some heavy rain. At Charleville the Warrego was up and we had to a take a small detour to get across. Got to Quilpie no problems and then all the way to the park….only to find the park was closed. Not too upset as there had been rain and that had been a risk we took. On the way out we ran into the cocky (property owner) from the property which shares a boundary with the park only to be informed that the park has been closed for 2 MONTHS!!!!!!!!!!!!! We will do 2,500 kms (1,500 miles) for nothing.

Seriously Qld Parks and Wildlife could not organise a you know what in a brothel. I had been checking the website and not only was it listed as open, over the past 2 weeks the status had been changed from “No current alerts for this park” ( I copied and pasted that!) to, “Weather Warning” and then back to “No current alerts for this park” which was how it was listed when I checked before we left Charleville this morning.

I had been planning this trip for 4 weeks and constantly checking the park status. We drove all the way from Brisbane specifically to visit the park. Maybe Qld Parks would like to pick up the tab for my fuel bill….fat chance…even though we pay the salaries of these morons.:gaah:

Thanks for the tip.............

I'm heading to Bathurst then Adelaide (Motor Racing) planning on going roads I haven't tried before including Vic River country & Big Desert on the way down. Broken Hill, Burke, Cunnamulla, Charleville etc. on the way back.

I too have been watching the road reports very carefully with all the flooding but now I'm not so sure I can trust them.

I have lost a lot of faith mate that is for sure. Half of what you hear if not worth a cold pie. The cops in Charleville told me the road the Quil;pie would be closed for sure even though they didn't really know. The Fire & Rescue guys I met in the bakery told me it was open no worries. We got through and could not even see evidence of water over the road. the local cop in Quilpie had no idea about road conditions..told me to check the sign on the way out of town. It said open so we pressed on and it was all good.

Parks and Wildlife however blew the lot...I still have steam coming out of my ears as I eagerly await a response from the State Minister. I am not holding my breath though.

I don't know if it is jsut me but you used to be able to rely on that sort of info from the local coppers but these days they just don't seem to have any idea. The guy in Charleville siad...I have only been on duty for an hour....the Warrego was well up, detours signs were out, rain forecast..cut my legs off and call me shorty but I reckon it would have been of growing importance......bet he knows this week now the Warrego has peaked at 7.78??? metres
