Strange noise, HELP... URGENT

I have 2009 H3 with 60K miles.
So, I'm leaving work today, got in my truck, started and it was fine. As soon as I started to drive the strange whistling noise appeared. The higher the RPMs the noise would get louder and it got very loud. At first I thought that it is as usual from serpentine belt (maybe one of the pulleys got bed)... Pupped the hood and was surprised that the noise was not coming from the front of the engine. It was coming more from underneath of the transmission area... I checked the oil and it was just bit to high over the full mark(could be that dealers put a bit to much oil in... but I think it's not a bigy)
So I drove it to my brothers garage for about 2 miles. At first it was whistling like crazy but when I got on the highway the whistling noise almost stopped. By the time time I got to my brother it was completely gone and instead there was low wabeling - grinding noise. It sounded more like a heat shield was loos.(that was my brothers first guess)... after looking under it, we checked that all of the bolts tight up and everything is in place. The noise is coming somewhere from between the engine and transmission... So, there are 3 possibilities...
1. Starter is not released fully. Usually causes very loud grinding noise. I don't think that this is it.
2. Pressure plate is cracked. Usually causes knocking noise. This could be it, but it should not whistle.
3. Transmission oil pump got bed. I'm thinking most likely this is it.

In any case, it supposed to be covered by powertrain warranty(5years/100K miles), so tomorrow I'm going to the dealer to let the look at it.

Has anyone one ever had in issue like that?
I never heard anyone having issue with transmission oil pump

I'm assuming you have an automatic, so I'm at a loss in regard to a pressure plate.

Yes, it is automatic. maybe I'm naming this part wrong. It the thing that sits on the transmission near the flywheel that is turned by the starter.

Flex plate on an automatic, flywheel on a manual; although many call them both flywheels. But if you have a whining, I can't imagine it is a flex plate. I'm wondering (and that means a while ass guess), if it could be the vent, whistling through a broken vent hose, or the hose is off?

The noise was to loud for that. Plus, will the noise change with RPMs?
Noise was so loud that at first I thought that the bearing broke on one of the pulleys.

Also, Is the Flex plate covered by the power train warranty?

No. The noise definitely coming from the transmission.

I had issues with the transmission oil pump but I don't recall any noises with it. Mine would just intermittently fail, or at least intermittently stop my truck from engaging the driveline.

The sprags or bands can make some really weird noises. Had the 2-4 band singing shortly after they did an overhaul on the trans.

Update:
Started the ruck in the morning and the whistling noise came back. It seems it is more loud on the cold temps. After driving for some time the noise get dimmer and then turns in to rumbling noise.

Coukd it be the torque converter's "clutch" thats not fully disengaging?

when was that last time you change the oil mine sounded like that just before the transmission went bang
it definitely sound like it is in the transmission area.

I did not change the transmission oil yet but I have 60K and you have to change it on 100K. But last year I had problem with transmission speed sensor and it was replaced under warranty. After that I noticed that my oil level a bit high, the dealers had add some, not sure why because you don't need to drain oil when you change the sensor.

BTW. Did you figured out what exactly broke in the transmission? Or did they just got the new one in?

Well mines going under the knife tomorrow. Sheared exhaust manifold bolt on drivers side. :/

lol you could just drive it around like that until whatever it is fails. When people ask you what the sound is just say its a supercharger! :horns::wink:

All fixed, $478 bucks later. Exhaust manifold was in good shape, so new gasket and new bolts. Now to get these new shocks in this week and an alignment.

if the temp gets up on the oil it is no good anymore so????
i think the return filter was blocked and it let go???

they placed it under warranty

Update:

Drop it off to the dealership yesterday. 4 hours later service called me and said that they are not sure what it is exactly, but it definitely comes from transmission, so they will have to take it all a part and rebuild it. Their guess was that something happened to torque converter and it broke the oil pump. They said that they plan to replace both TC and pump. I guess I will find out what happened in couple of weeks.
Kind of bummed out that they are overhauling the trany instead of just replacing it with a new one. But at least it is a warranty and i don't have to pay anything for it.

For the rental they gave me a Silverado extended cab. Drove it for few days and can not wait to get my H3 back...

Thanks for the update. This is covered under warranty I assume?

I wonder if that has anything to say in their decision.... replace vs. rebuild..... Maybe it's cheaper for GM to pay them the (warranty) hourly rate instead of having to fork over a brand new transmission.

If the rebuild is done right it should last quite a while though.....

Update:
Picked up my truck from the dealers yesterday. The verdict was the fail in the toque converter. They replaced it, flashed the oil and reprogrammed all of the computers. So far no noise. There is some hissing coming out from the transmission but i don't think it is something extraordinary.
