Spare tire

Kind of a dumb question But I just put 35'' tires on my h3 and my spare is 33''. now in the event of a flat the 33'' tire will not work because of the all wheel drive. Am I right, or will it work on the front or back I have a 07 H3-X
Thank you for your input.

While its not recommended it could work just make sure your not in 4hi lock or 4 lo lock and your diffs aren't locked. Without diffs being locked and being in 4hi unlocked there is enough differentiation in the t case and axles to avoid damage but your still better off with a full size eventually

I don't do the 5-wheel rotation so finding a used 315/75r 16 with half the tread remaining was perfect for me.

Myself, I would invest in a new fullsize spare and rotate all 5 before its to late and the other get worn down. For me, it a cood investment. I will buy all 5 each time

I don't know how far you'd have to drive with mismatched tires before damaging the diff, but the risk gets higher as you go further. If you're always going to be 15 minutes from a tire shop, don't worry about it and just air down the others to the same hgt as the 33 if you have to use it. If yo live or you're going to go wheeling deep in the boonies, I'd say invest in a 35 as a spare. Might find a used one cheap.

Disagree. In Ouray we helped out a stranded H3 and put a 33" spare onto his base H3 with 32s, as he was in the midst of 3 flats (patched one, one was shredded). That truck made un-funny noises all the way into town. His truck was fighting the different tire sizes.

I wish I could find that thread from about 5 years ago, this guy had bought an H3 with mismatched tire sizes. Put several thousand miles on it before noticing it with no adverse effects. All street miles.

The way I look at it - how far do you want to go before you realize you lost the "test"? Heck, I'm wondering if having modestly mismatched tires (Ones with 25,000 miles, another with 0 miles) leads to wear and tear on the transfer case and failure 50,000 miles in. My last t-case imploded on the street. Can't prove it, but there's a logic there that it could contribute to the wear over a long time. And saving $300 on a tire to contribute to an early failure of a part like a transfer case or diff isn't a gamble I feel like proving.

Think of it this way - we know that the H3 must be flat towed with all four wheels spinning. It cannot be dolly towed, with only two wheels spinning. That suggests the H3 is mechanically intolerant of the front wheels traveling at a different speed than the rear wheels. Now, I realize something like 70mph front and 0 mph rear is a vast difference, but can you accurately state what the safe difference is? Is it a 10 mph difference, a 1 mph difference, a 5.5% difference, like pairing a 33 with a 35? And are you confident enough in that to run with that setup for 10,000 miles or even 20 miles? Mind if we drain your diffs and t-case at the end, look for metal shavings and/or send the oil in for analysis?

BTW, for those that are saying "deflate the tire" - the circumference of the tire doesn't change when you deflate the tire. It still travels the same distance on each rotation.
