Spare tire mount

A bit of info that might save some one some trouble. When the jerk that whacked an orange barrel that I missed but not the base which must have had a metal ring in it, cut my tire I had to limp to a safe place to change it. In the pouring heavy rainfall no less. One of the spare mounting studs that are only spot welded broke loose. Lots of fun there!
The beadlocks did their job. Glad this was before my new tires.
Did some grinding and welding. Those pincher type welders or robots don't cut it!! It had 3 tiny spots of welds under the head.
I would recommend doing this NOW!

This is a must. I ran into the same problem. I was lucky I was in the shop when it happened. Would hate have to solve this on the trail.

Yep I broke one loose when I realized I had a wheel lock on it and no key. Had the weld the stud back in, I guess I should have welded the other two.

So...you're saying that the problem is the studs on the bracket, rotate in the hole?

That would totally suck if you needed to swap a spare on the trail! I'm running 37"s now, and I've been toying with a complete re-do of the spare tire mount. I need to raise it up higher and also chop it down, so it hugs the door closer. This is because I'm running -12mm offset wheels, and they sort of stick-out further than stock.

In a related mod...I'm looking at fabbing a rear-winch bumper, and the spare tire well that is normally cut into the THORparts bumper will be going away. This area will be used to house the winch on the back-side of the bumper. This will no doubt force the spare up even higher on the door. When I get around to this mod...I'll make sure to put some real welds on the backside of the studs. Thanks for the headsup.

I did exactly that for exactly the same reasons. I just cut OEM mount, slid it in, and re-welded. The difference is I swapped wheel bolt pattern so I just used a Jeep mount and welded it higher up. Now the wheel is snug and even fits the 40".

Not only did it rotate but fell out. The three spot welds broke. I got the nut loose about the time it let go and was able to thread it off the rest of the way by reaching in and holding it by hand, but my arm barely reached. Not sure I could have gotten a pair of vise grips in there if it had still been tight.

I had to unbolt the mount from the rear door with the tire still attached to get the wheel off. Just glad no other damage accrued.
