RIP QV MV50 compressor

And hello new QV MV50 compressor!

I noticed that my compressor has been slowing down lately, to the point that yesterday it added 8psi to one tire in 10 minutes. I took the compressor apart today and found that the piston ring is shot and it simply isn't pushing much air into the hose anymore. One o-ring was just floating freely in the top assembly as well.

I went ahead and bought the same compressor again but this time I got it from Amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Industries-MV..._1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1346004473&sr=1-1 It seems like most compressors are rebranded versions of the same four or five compressors. For example, the Smittybilt version of this is about $30 more for what appears to be the same product.

You can see the torn up piston ring as well as all of the metal shavings below. This one served me well through five and a half years. It inflated tires in 110 degree heat (many times), rain and snow.

That's pretty good that it held out that long. Not many do. I just got a HD one for the garage because the 40s with the Viair were taking FOREVER!!! My Viair is a 100% duty cycle and can run all day but it was too slow. For tail duty it's perfect. With the large 110v one it does it in no time and I can also run air tool.

I have this compressor and just love it. You can't beat it for the money. The only issue I ever had was it blew the inline fuse a couple of times.

I carry a pack of fuses with this compressor. If I started the compressor with the chuck on the tire, and the tire's PSI was already around 28+, it would blow the fuse.

I also carry extra fuses, but I never thought about starting the compressor BEFORE I put the chuck on the tire. I will try that. Thanks

I started with the same compressor back in 2008. I lasted me almost three years before totally seizing on the trail. JRWid had a dual-cylinder that caught my eye so a little searching on Amazon got me this:

Well worth the extra money with how fast it inflates larger tires.

Sounds like you should consider CO2. Any portable compressor will take a while to fill 40"s.

My CO2 tank has never blown a fuse.

My QV50 died as well one day... I ended up getting a Viair 100% duty cycle compressor that was lowpressure but high volume, it fills my 9gal on-board air tank in about 10 minutes to 150psi. I paid a lot for it, so im hoping for some extra reliability.

Can you give some details on your tank? I did the muffler delete in the back and was thinking of putting in a large air tank since my one gallon is only good enough for running the air horn.

Yea, the biggest problem with CO2 is me remembering to refill it.

I can get a lot of fuses for the price of a Powertank

This compressor isn't a perfect solution by any means but it works for me. My first choice would be on board air but I don't see that happening for me

Man, you must live way outside of town. I have a brother-in-law that lives near Raleigh, NC. so I'm somewhat familiar with the area. I googled "CO2 tank Raleigh, NC" and I found 18 hits, 5 that appear to be within ~10 miles of Raleigh, NC.

I usually fill mine at a Welding Supply store, but you can also ask a local beer keg supplier (got any of them in NC?) they usually know a local CO2 source. Also try fire and safety equipment suppliers (any place that does fire extinguishers refills) and even paint ball stores will refill CO2 tanks.
