Rate my idea on a Onboard System Set Up

So I'm thinking on setting up a on board air system. My original plan, and set up consist of a 5 gal Viair tank. And use my Viair 450-Portable compressor to fill up and keep the tank filled.
The tank is a 5 gal and it is rated for 150 psi which I think is plenty for all the air I might ever need, for inflating my tires, to running an air horn, as well running air-tools (maybe since I have cordless already).
Anyways, I called up Viair and ask them if I could hook up my portable compressor to a tank and use/run it as an onboard system which they say that they don't usually have their portable compressors use to fill up air tanks or use as onboard systems that I should use their C versions for this.
Anyways that don't work for me since in that case I'd just go with the ARB portable air tank route which runs for about $600 or so. Too much money that could be used for another mod, ammo or beer.

I noticed that the air compressor shuts off when the hose has had enough to air and start up running when the hose loose pressure and continues working until the pressure is built up in the hose and shuts off again. With this in mind I pulled out my owners manual and I was reading the following

in my understanding the psi that the compressor will ever reach is 120-145 psi, which will give me a 30 or 5 psi to spare from my original limit of 150 psi.

Is this an accurate conclusion or no ???

Also I plan on running + & - cables straight from the battery and splice the battery terminal end on the compressor's cable and attach them to the cables coming from battery. This way allowing me to use the compressor's on and off switch as well the cable and fuse that's already in.

As for the tank it comes with 4 hole 2 1/4"F and 2 3/8"F. I plan on keeping this set up as a 1/4" so I would be using 2 adapters from 3/8" to 1/4"

I'm also planning on adding a compressed air filter regulator modular combo with manual drain, metal bowl, etc. to have control of the air's psi when coming out.

There's also going to be on and off valves at each end of the tank to be able to close everything up without having to bleed the air tank in case work is require somewhere in the lines.
As well I'd be using a 50 ft EPDM Rubber hose from Good Year instead of the silly yellow air hose that came with my compressor.

I run twin 444 Viair compressors, but they're mounted under the vehicle - I've yet to find a need to run an air dryer. Is there moisture in the tires? sure? maybe? but it's so little and it would serve to add balancing to the tires - so I wonder at why bother with a regulator/dryer

There's little reason to run an air tank unless you keep it full and maybe that's what their point is - you fill a tank at home, use it for the first bit to quickly inflate, then use the portable compressor to finish the task. If you want to quickly inflate - CO2 is your answer.... and it's the cheapest of all. If you're in the field, why would you fill the tank? quite simply an air line (3/8") with a grip-style fill and you can fill a portable tank while you're on your way - it would be more flexible... alternatively, you could daisy-chain through the tank....

Yeah I toyed around with that option of having just a portable tank, can pick some up for as low as 40 dollar for a 11 gal at the harbor freight store, seriously IDK I just want an onboard system to have the air option to 1 fill up my tires faster, as well be able to run a nice and loud air horn, also maybe go air route in the rear OX locker instead of electric I was originally planing on installing, second to that the ability to running air tools since I have electric cordless 18 volt already as primary tools.

As far as mounting the compressor inside, be aware that the cylinder and the first couple feet of your hose will be EXTREMELY hot. I have the SuperFlow MV-90, which is identical to yours, and after airing up two tires the cylinder and hose are so hot you can't touch them. Seriously, I've poured water on the hose to cool it enough to pack away after airing, and it sizzles and boils off. If you air up all your tires and put it all back in the bag it came with you would melt the bag.

As for air tanks, in my experience the only real use for them is for being able to run air lockers without needing the compressor to kick on every time you engage it. For airing up and running tools, you'll use up the air in the tank in just a few seconds and then the compressor will be running constant anyway until you stop flowing air. 12v compressors just don't make enough cfm.

Also, air is very inefficient to store compressed. You just can't fit a big enough tank on a rig to give you any real advantage. That's what they make the Co2 setups for. If your going to take up space to mount a tank, I would go with a Co2 tank, and then you can supplement with your compressor if you run out. Just another option! [emoji6]

Good valid points there, what size tire you running 35"s 37"s I have fill up my 35"s from 12 psi to 35psi in the SoCal summer heat about 90-100+ degrees all 4 and the compressor yes it was hot but not enough to burn the bag or plastic I mean the rubber handle haven't melt maybe wrap the hose in it so as it not lighting up my roof liner or plastic up on fire or melt them.
Also Would my idea of the compressor shutting off once it has build up enough psi in the tank in this case 120-135 psi in the hose, would this would remain truth to the tank meaning it reaching the 135 psi, and it translating to the 5 gallons, or how would that equation work, that's something I'm trying to figure out, since the tank is rated for 150 psi does that translate to 5 gal of air at 150 psi or how does that work. IDK Squad about air psi and gallons or all that, I mainly want this et up rated so as it doesn't blow up in the truck or have an accident for that matter since it would be right behind my kids...I am known for doing and adventuring in scheiße I know nothing about, however since my truck is my wife and daughter and soon to born kid are going to be in the truck I don't want an air tank blowing up and F'ing them due to my ignorance, at least my kids my wife is replaceable XP lol

Also my reason to wanting to mount it inside is to keep it protected, clean and easy accessible in the cargo are only my dog and some trail spare are pack there when wheeling everything else is inside on the floor on the passenger row. Food tools water etc. might need to get me one of your cool roof rack in order to mount a bigger louder air horns

On the mean time planning on running this air horn I think I'd need the air tank i listed

My tires are 37"s, and I'm usually airing up from 15-18 to 40.

Yes, as long as the shutoff pressure of your compressor is less than the rated pressure of your tank, and your lines and everything else in your system, then you would be safe. As far as how much volume you would have available, I'm not sure exactly how to calculate that. I'm sure someone here is! I do know though, that in a small tank the volume you would get between your kick-on and kick-off pressures will be very low. I would guess that with the tank full, if you started airing up a tire the compressor would kick on in less than 30 seconds, and would then run constant until you stopped airing. The compressor simply can't pump more volume than you will be flowing while airing or running an air tool.

The gallons only refers to the actual physical capacity of the tank as measured with water. Air volume is measured in cubic feet, and air consumption is measured in cfm, or cubic feet per minute. The volume of air available from your tank is a factor of psi differential between on and off. And while I don't know the formula to figure it, practical experience tells me that with a small tank, and your on/off pressures that close together, you won't get very much volume out of it between cycles.

Some of the best 12v compressors are rated at less than 4 cfm. Most are less than 3. And that rating is at a specific psi. For example, my MV90 is rated at 3.71 cfm @ 90 psi. And that volume capacity goes down exponentially as psi goes up. So at 130-145 psi I won't be putting out near that.

For reference, most decent 1/2" drive air guns require around 5 cfm @ 90 psi. Cheap ones, like Harbor Freight, can require as much as 9 or 10 cfm. You can get some really expensive high end ones that use a little less, but not by much.

Airing tires is a very high volume demand on an air system. When I worked as a tire monkey we had twin 10 gallon tanks on our service trucks, and we ran large Viair belt driven two cylinder compressors under the hood. I don't remember the cfm rating of them, but they far surpass any 12v compressor. When airing tires or running air guns the compressor ran a lot. It was able to surpass the demand and fill the tank to kickoff psi under use, but would not be off for long before kicking back on just because of the tank capacity.

I run two compressors underneath my vehicle... they've been there for 2 years and have always worked when asked. With that said, I'm putting an air tank on my FJ40 but it's a 12 cfm system - the reasons for the tank isn't storage (because the compressor can easily keep up with the max flow allowed through the hose) but because I need a place to mount the shut off switches, blow-off valve, and create a place for the air and water to fall out of the compressed air. Perhaps you should consider a York system? ;)

that heat thing brought up by others - was an "oh yeah" for me... we'd bury ours in the snow to cool them off enough to use. I also found that I needed to use braided stainless line because of the heat generated

Main reason I wanted inside is because for one I'm a mud-whore I like to hit every mud hole I see, and that turns to be pretty messy, second the rock crawling, I want it to be safe from them rocks. Which once I have that set of skid plates that are rancho compatible from sarcasm I believe, I will have little to n worry about what I go over which would mean if I have the air system under I have the possibility to damage it, and won't be as stress free.

York system as like the compressor that taps into your serpentine band and is power like that ??? My buddy mention of something like that. Haven't really look into that since I already have a compressor.

And yes I plan on running a stainless line from the compressor to the tank, and since it was mention that it gets hot I'd either still warp it in heat resistant material or something like that. I think 5 gal would be plenty of air to give me a good boost at inflating my tires and then having the compressor run for a bit to top it off, like I said I have inflated all of my 4 my tires before at 100+ Fahrenheit temperatures without the compressor shutting off however it was hat yet not too hat as not to be put inside its bag (which I leave open common sense since it was hot) now being inside with that much air and air condition temperature might help to keep it cool.

As for everyday driving the compressor would be mostly off since the o oh thing I'd be running while the truck is being used it would be the air horn which 5 gal should be more than plenty and I not then that's where the compressor comes to play, my truck is now my wife DD and she rarely drives it and when she does drives it isn't for more than 10-20miles a day, and chances of her using the horn in that short distance is almost none.
Another reason for the air source would be the OX locker and setting it up with the air option instead of the electric which would be cheaper.
These two souls be the main uses everything else would be just a bonuses.
As for the air filter what not is just as a complement to a well built and end system as well able to regulate the pressure of desire to have a certain psi.
When I do thing I have the bad habit of over doing them or over building them, but I like to have an extra piece of mind.

Again this thread was meant as a rate to a moderate to semi heavy duty air system set up. And being safe as not to blow up right behind my kids and endangering due to their dad being uninformed and installing a ticking air bomb behind them.

I have used air and CO2. CO2 is much faster but you have to get the tank filled somewhere. Seems like there were several threads were people had set up pretty cool onboard air systems. Have you searched to see what they did? One might have been Al but can't remember.

Wouldn't the noise of the compressor be close to unbearable when ran inside the rig. Not sure how loud your compressor is, but it will be even louder inside the rig.

These little compressors are loud as hell and put out some serious heat, so I would definitely be careful were you mount it. I have mine in the SUT storage box and the only thing I can say or add is try to limit the amount of connections, bends, tees, fittings, etc.. Maybe its just me, but I seem to always be chasing some minor leaks in my setup. I have a 5 gallon tank, filter/dryer, regulator, multiple fittings, multiple quick connect points, various lengths of airlines, check valve, etc.. I have used pipe dope, teflon tape and various other way of sealing these fittings, compression, clamps, etc.., but in the nature of beating on these rigs, it seams all these fittings, tend to continuously work themselves loose over time. So my suggestion is the fewer connections you can tolerate, the better.

One of my unexplored ideas is a custom cargo management system with a drawer taking 2/3 of the space and an open or hinged space for the compressor on the side. You can build an open frame around allowing some items to be stacked above it, though airflow would still be important. This type of setup would allow for a small tank which would be helpful for an air locker.

I don't find the compressor being that loud, is just a semi buzzing sound can easily be overwhelm by the sound system, and with 5 gallons I don't see why the need for the compressor to be on all the time, maybe run it for the 3-5 min it while the engine is warming up and then shut it off is the sounds is too loud or something, those 3-5 min would build enough air in the tank to have enough air to run the air horn.

Yes there's the fender metal which I will tap on and use a bolt to secure the tank and compressor, run some sort of metal or washer to make a bigger print and make it more sturdy. And I tot around with the idea of a drawer as well as one of the member here did I believe search and rescue H3 if I'm not mistaking, yet I don't want to rob my German Shepherd From Space on the Back. Mainly why I am not considering a drawer.

And yeah I search for onboard build threads here and on Google but most of them the set ups are outside, which in trying to stay away from. Want it inside safe and easy accessible and clean to maintain it, specially since I like to hit mud.

I think it will be just fine, as long as your cutoff pressure is lower than the weakest link in the whole system. And that tank will be more than enough for your air horn and any future air locker setup. I was only trying to share thoughts/experience on using air tools and airing up with that type of system. Not at all sir and I appreciate your and everyone's input, that's why I made a thread, to get input and advises of my system as well what to look and expect. Since my kids are going to be ridding in the truck as well, and don't want them to be at risk of the tank blowing up ornsoenthing, the hose I'm using are rated for 200-250 psi, and again the compressor can make more than 150 psi since it shut off at 120-145 psi and if the compressor's sensor might fail then I have a 150 psi release valve on the tank as well.
So I guess all that remains is to proceed to gather my components.

this is just FYI from what I've done..

the York, serpentine system

-Freightliner used the pump with serpentine on their big rigs... I have no idea whether or not you have the room to add a second a/c compressor to your mix





this is what I'm eliminating on my York system (what I alluded to earlier)


I play in water, mud, snow, and hot weather and I've not had a minute of trouble with it.
