Maybe you need to have a dipnet standing by?
It is still some great stuff. I bet you get it worked out.

I'm almost embarrassed to ask this among you guys with the ultra fancy SLR's, but I need a replacement camera. My beloved Canon PowerShot G5 that I have had for years finally died. That camera fit my needs well. I've thought about an SLR, but don't want the hassles. I'm looking at the G7 (used, eBay obviously), but wondered if anyone had any input or if I'm talking ancient history here.

Step to the 9 at least. It leveled off after the 9 a bit Imo... but the 9 and 10 are very good values for what they do. I've had a few of the G's, and still use an 11 I think it is as a backup and for time lapse videos of shoots we're doing.

I purchased this a month ago, and it takes great photos and even has GPS built in. For some odd reason, red is a lot cheaper than silver or black.

Does the S9300 have a built in ND filter? I couldn't find the answer on Nikon's web site, or maybe overlooked it. For whatever reasons, I like waterfall, flowing water pictures, so that's something I really need to have.

Not that I know of. Not sure if only one ND filter or setting would do the job. I know I have about four ND filters for my DSLR Nikons, and have been known to stack a few to get the speeds down nice and slow.

Hunner I thought you might be interested in the results of a bit of playing I did with the 70-200 and 2x converter mounted on the D700. Please excuse the composition and the wire fence but this car was travelling at over 35mph. I have found that the result with my D90 is no where near as good.

A good comparison would be a shot using a tripod with and without the converter. That would probably be easier on a stationary object, like you sitting with a cold one in a relaxed state holding something with some bold lettering on it, like say "Adventure before Dementia" lol
I think F5 uses a converter at times also in that combination.
It is something I have considered if I was back into shooting motorcycle and car racing.
Your 700 would allow bumping ISO to make up for light loss but have higher resolution and use higher shutter speeds.
When I tried that combo I noticed a shorter depth of field but was expecting that at the larger magnification.

I'll work on that for you! These were a couple of stationary shots with the D90 with the converter and the 70-200 maxed out. the D90 seems OK for still or slow moving but the D700 definitely handles fast moving better.

Those look pretty sharp taking into account they are also compressed on here.
The increased resolution of the 700 probably accounts for the sharper looking images when comparing even with the moving subjects.
I love Nikon glass too!

I don't see much for Canon out here. I have a T3i right now, but hopefully will be upping to a full frame 6D soon. My favorite lens is the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II USM. I want to pick up a 16-35 f/2.8 IS II USM at some point soon for weddings and other fun things.

The light trail picture is a 30 second exposure with a wide open aperture at like 5am. The lightning in the sky behind the scene didn't happen all at once. It accumulated over the duration of the exposure time. That was shot with a tripod.

The second one with lightning above a parking lot was shot free hand (I didn't have my tripod with me). Basically fully open the aperture, set the ISO high enough that you don't get camera shake when you shoot (because you want the longest possible exposure time), and go out and stare at the sky through the view finder. Sometimes during lightning storms I just point at a seemingly active spot in the sky and click click click click click for several minutes then later go back and look through them, hoping one might have some lightning in it. Some bolts last long enough to see in the viewfinder and still get it in the shot (If you're quick enough). Basically it's been bored (and often rained on) 98% of the time, getting an awesome shot of lightning the other 2%. This has been my experience anyhow.

When I have the chance again, I will be sure to have my tripod and set up up for maximum exposure time and just take photo after photo. This works best. :)

With a couple of upcoming events with stage lighting I decided it was time to check more seriously on the digital FX format and the improved sensors they have. They have reduced the noise a lot.
I have made the progression from D70 to D200 and D300.
I researched the D800 for days but decided for my needs the D600 was the better choice for many reasons.
I found a deal locally so had the chance to see how many of my DX lenses would actually work and what the limitations were.
This thing has a setting to adapt to those lenses pulling the sweet spot out of the middle displaying a crop frame but at a reduced MP.
That is also a way to zoom FX lenses.
I decided to get a full frame mid range zoom that will give me what I had with the DX.
The 24mm to 85mm full frame true values FX lens was reviewed as being one of those sleeper lenses that turns out really sharp. It has VR. I did lots of comparison photos and can see that it is.
I shot this at my friends shop with only overhead mixture of color balance florescent lights on a high ceiling, no flash.
I bumped it to ISO 5000 just to see how bad it would be. The thing goes to 6400 and then will bump up to 25,000 ISO in increments.
I can't load the full frame on here at 24 MP it's image dimensions are 6016 x 4016 it is really sharp and looks good cranked up to about 66%.
This is compressed to 600 x 800 I did not sharpen this one but I can see it loses some compressed.

Which one? ha ha
I shot some video with this which was not really one of the reasons for buying it and it looks good.

I have had time to give this D600 a work out, 1306 clicks at various settings. I'm closing in on my two custom pre-sets and have so far been impressed with the newer technology sensor and processor.
I still have some tweaking I will do on the set up.
This is about 100% crop out of the original image before I changed any settings.
I used the24-85. ISO1000
DAH_0335-5x7s100-100.jpg

I grabbed a prime 50mm 1.8 on sale, best bargain there is. This was a full length shot cropped her head to 5x7.
ISO 400 I can see the blood vessels in her eyes sharply on the original and even compressed to 800 x600 on here they look pretty good.
DAH_1103-5x7.jpg

Used a ring light on the 24-85 for this one, I think I need to dust! ISO 1000

This is a preliminary post on my findings with an "ipad 4 Retina display" I just took the plunge for.
My small laptop I have been using to transfer images to while traveling is fairly old in technology terms. The compact fast boot up of the ipad finally seems to have gotten my attention with the addition of the higher resolution display.
A million more pixels than than HDTV! 2048 x 1536 pixles per inch.
(which by the way the new iphone 5 also has retina)

The 24 megapixle images from the D600 were killing the old processor.

This could be obvious to others but I thought for the price of this device it would have a more complete and friendly way to upload.
First thing I discovered was Apple's insistence on protecting "itunes" uploads by preventing up loading and "adding" to music and for some strange reason images.
If you upload music or pictures by using "itunes" and then try to add more it will wipe out what you previously had. Then for the music I found out, later, (asked my daughter) you can select "manage manually" for the music and that will work to a point or you can go thru the clouds and it gets more involved from there.
The picture situation stinks. The selection for individual images will not highlight (as confirmed by many Google searches) just albums. I tried just repeatedly using a folder on my desk top just to upload to ipad thru itunes and then sort them out. That means you have to include previous pictures each time when using itunes to "sync" and you get bloated unreadable at this time, file folders from itunes back in you originating computers photo program.
Anyway, I experimented and found I could use a lightening to SD card dongle which shows up on the ipad as "camera" and add pictures to that card from my computer and upload that way to folders on ipad, sort of.
I also am experimenting with an app "Focus Point" that got my attention because it shows my EXIF file info. It does not show shutter speed for some reason and I am in contact with them about possibly including that.

I will use a separate thread about also now replacing the laptop in the H3 for navigation.
Too many toys and trail and not enough time!

That looks pretty nice Hunner! The photos are great. I purchased a D300S about 2 years ago. I haven't really overworked it. It doesn't get my heart going like my F5 does. I still would LOVE to have a D2XS. I had one for less than a month and then the shutter went south. The store wouldn't repair for me, so they refunded the money.

Like I say, still watching for a CLEAN, non-beat, D2XS that is CLEAN. No, I don't want to pay an arm and a leg.

Funny to see this thread again.....

I still own my Nikon camera and lenses but it all mostly just sits at home because it's all so heavy and bulky. Most of the time I end up using the camera in my cell phone which is surprisingly good.
