Performance Loss? 285/75/16 to 315/75/16

For those that have upgraded their tire sizes.. have you notice an decrease in performance when doing so? I know in my tacoma when I upgraded to 33's I notice a loss a bit of power.

I had the 3.7 and 1,2, and 3 are not to bad but 4th is we're you will really notice it. Level surface is okay unless there is a headwind, any inclines it won't hold. Also speeds above 70 it will start having a hard time again. I did not have mine reprogrammed so my rpms were a little lower than stock so if you did that it will help a little bit. Looking back I would still do it but I'd mod for a little more power but if I had a choice I'd have an alpha instead

I have an Alpha and went up to 35's and there is a noticeable slight loss in power, but I haven't had mine reprogrammed or re-tuned yet after other upgrades.

exactly what i wanted to find out too cause i have an alpha as well. Its a daily driver for my wife and occasionally might tow. I probably should stick to the 285/75/16 then

Yes, I noticed the power loss on my Alpha also, only when driving steep grades. Maybe a little 0-60 loss, but not as noticeable as the gear shifting on grades.

maybe running 4.56s would help?

I've had my Alpha for awhile now and kept it stock so far with 285's. When the current tires are ready to replace, thinking about going to the KO2's in 295 size and cranking the torsion bars some just to get it close to level. Going up to 295's should not affect Alpha power much. The main benefit of 315's is the added clearance for off road use.

Yeah. I read somewhere that running 4.56s on an Alpha is weaker for the diff. Or maybe it was with 37s. Can't remember where I read that. Something about the gear teeth being smaller

I have the V8 and is running 315/75R16. Had my PCM software done and was still acceptable for daily driving. But when towing it was a killer so i regeared the diffs to 4.56. And well worth it

I re-geared Nightrod's Alpha last week and I've been driving it around this week to get some miles on the new gears. He is running a Rancho and 35"s...works very well with the new 4.56s. The speedo is now off a bit so a re-flash of the TCM will be needed. I'm sure mileage will suffer a bit but, hey...it's a Hummer, (and the words "Hummer" and "mileage" should never appear in the same sentence).

i really appreciate everyone chiming in. gives me an idea with what we are trying to accomplish right now. maybe down the road ill go bigger and regear. of course im still waiting for that supposedly diesel swap thats going to be available for us.

I'm sure the power loss will also depend on the weight of the new 35's as well. Are you going to be going to 315 TOYO M/T or 315 BFG KM2? I would expect the more difference between current and new tire weight would make the difference more noticeable.

I'm currently on 285/75/r16 Nitto Terras and will be switching to 315/75/r16 duratracs when I get the funds, so hopefully there isn't too much of a loss of power there.

I upgraded to 295s on my Alpha and did not notice much difference. I am also considering moving up to 315s but I am worried about the performance loss.

Keep it on 285s, going to 315s definitely affects performance, city mileage, and especially handling (cornering and braking). I would only get 35s for offroad use; for city driving I miss my stock 33s, but I rarely drive in the city anymore so the bigger tires are worth it for me.

35's are a real power sucker, if you like to pass people off stoplights and what not then stick to smaller tires. But If you daily drive to work 10 miles in the suburbs everyday then you would hardly notice at all.

I avoid going in deep mud with them, but for everything else I've done with them they are perfect. Plenty of grip on wet rocks and light mud is no issue. I also get anywhere from 14.5-15.9 mpg (haven't quite got 16 yet) with them with the kind of driving I do. The only issue I have with them is that they look skinny for such a blocky vehicle and I can tell that they would be problematic in deeper mud. That's why I'm tempted to get 305's or 315's.

Would there be much of a performance loss between 305's and 315's in the same tire brand? I would expect a slight bit with of power loss even with the V8 but if there wouldn't be much of a difference between 305 and 315, I would go for 315. They seem to make a massive difference look-wise.
