Curious as to how many people belong to the NRA, or Gun Owners of America.

I keep reading that there are 90 million gun owners in the USA, but only 4.4 million NRA members.

Just curious....

Seems to me like many gun owners take their right to own for granted, not understanding the organizations like the NRA and GOA fight to keep those rights.

I have been through all the membership levels. Yearly, Life, Patron, Benefactor.....ran out of the level membership stickers long ago. Golden Eagle member. If you are a gun owner you should belong to the NRA. My wife is an NRA member also. ( and a damn good shot )

Well I know this may be a suprise as I am a very active 2nd ammendment advocate but I guess I took the free ride. I will be at a gun show this weekend and will be joining NRA.

Ditto for me, been through all the levels as well. I haven't joined the Golden Eagles yet, but did participate in the Rough Riders. I'm also a member of CRPA: California Rifle and Pistol Association as well as a Platinum member of USCCA: United States Concealed Carry Association. Bought a jr. NRA membership the last 2 years for my friends 12yr. old nephew he likes guns like most boys, but his mom is against all guns including BB guns, and toy ones. I thought he should at least know all about them in case when he's older he gets a gun hopefully he will know how to handle it. Now back to teaching my Mom and Wife how to shoot.

Yes they do but so does every political, club oriented and member entity I am involved with. The best use of fundraising resources is to go to the people that you know are down with the cause. As annoying as it can be it is the most effective use of fundraising dollars. Every political party, candidate, member oriented organization, hell even my old college fraternity inundate me with fundraising letters. Silly me, I do send them money from time to time also.

NRA Member! I had a discussion last week with a non gun-owner and she was quite pleasant and willing to listen and understand my take on gun control. After our talk, I think she had a different opinion of why our 2nd amendment is so important. She still does not want to own a gun, because she feels at the end of the day law enforcement and the military will always be able to protect her. I am glad she is ok with that, but I don't want to leave my family and/or property at risk and at the mercy of others to protect.

Unless you live next door to a police station you will most likely have to defend yourself while waiting for the police to arrive, if you even have time to call them before you have to act/react. I feel sorry for those that really think that the police, security company or anyone else will be Johnny on the Spot and stop a crime in progress on their behalf. It just doesn't happen that way very often. I would much rather the police dealt with it than me but I understand that they can't man a post at the end of my driveway, go with me to the grocery store and movies, etc so I have prepared myself to handle the sitautions as best I can on my own.
I also financially support those organizations that support the causes I believe in. They are much better at it than I am so I consider it money well spent.

I signed up recently, depending on what the NRA does in the next year or not will determine if I renew or not. I don't like how the NRA threw the first amendment under the bus to protect the second [I'm hearing many people parroting that video games and movies are causing the violence :roll: ]. I got a few shooting friends who are members of pretty much every group except NRA, due to their lack of action in some states [California] or running a clumsy media campaign.

Lets face it Kurt, CA is a lost cause on many fronts. With the overwhelming Democratic/liberal bent to the politics in this state there really isn't much the gun lobby can do here. I was a member of the CRPA for many years, NRA, etc but they can only do so much. In CA keeping gun issues in the forefront, fighting the good fight and limiting the damage is as good as it gets. Given that the liberals now have super majorities in the state Senate and House and we have Moonbeam as governor I expect it to get much worse. Quite honestly I would advise the NRA not to through away much money in CA. I think the only reason they are here is to show support for the CA membership. I cannot see the set of circumstances that would turn CA away from the path it is on. From spending, liberal social issues, debt, firearms, illegal immigration CA is going to continue on the path it is on until it crashes and burns. At some point, just like the federal government, no one will want to lend them anymore money. That is when the worm will turn and the real struggles will begin.

They do, but not directly. When you let them raise your kids and don't parent your children, they grow up thinking that stuff is normal. But heaven forbid parents actually spend time raising their spawn. I grew up on Doom, Duke Nukem, etc., but my parents gave a damn.

There are some states that the NRA cannot do anything about, unless they can sue in Federal Court (Chicago/DC come to mind). I live in UT, and really the NRA is not that active here, since they don't need to be. But I would still join if I was not already a life member.
The one reason why there might not be an assault weapons ban pass through the congress this year is due to the NRA and the **** they will bring upon some certain Senators in a few very red states.

As for the NRA throwing the video/movie industry under the bus, there is more to that then blaming a rifle is the reason people kill. If anything, those hollywood and video game generators are big supporters of the left.

But many people, in many states owe the NRA (and to a small degree the GOA/2nd Amendment Foundation) for their fight to keep their guns. I can just imagine how we would be armed if it were not for organizations like the NRA, GOA or 2nd Amendment foundation. Sticks and stones comes to mind.

All the Amendments are important but I can see where defenders of the Second Amendment might want to throw the First Amendent people under the bus, especially seeing how the MSM is heavenly complicit in trying to bury the Second Amendment. I have little use for most of the press because they are now in the news making business, not news reporting business. Most media outlets have agendas they push instead of report on. They have become less than useless to me. Advertisers pay attention here. I know many, many people that no longer take a paper, or take the old line magazines or watch the MSM channels for just that reason. If you want to reach us with your advertising dollars you need to look at other avenues to do it.

I was told by one of the NRA lobbyists at my local members council here in the Socialist Republic of California, that when the Congress was trying for what I think had something to with reporting of donors or maybe something else. It also had some type of thing that infringed on the 1st. Sorry for not remembering it was awhile ago. The NRA knew if they backed the bill, there was no way the anti-gunners in the Congress and Senate would let it pass and it went down to defeat. Kind of like reverse psychology.

non gun owner (want one) and non member (plan on becoming one in the future).

was going to look into getting one with my tax refund check. but since I supposedly owe about 5x of what I got refunded last year from the state that probably won't be happening.

and that was pretty much the the straw that broke the camel's back for me. I don't wanna live in CA anymore. I love the weather, I love having my family nearby but I can't live here for too much longer.

That's why I left that god forsaken state and moved to NC. CA has been slowly going down the drain since the 90s.

Al, not going down the drain so slowly anymore. State is beyond broke, is in the death clutches of the public service unions and has a liberal Democratic supermajority in both houses and a liberal Democratic governor that may be the most conservative part of the government here. The population has a huge percentage of hands out who is going to take care of me types( hence the Democratic party government control), no will/desire to cut spending or really even slow the growth of spending and very few places left to go for additional revenue. California's only hope is a federal government bailout from a broke federal government.
