If they would just remove that pesky carbon from the fuel we could finally have CO2 emission free vehicles and save the planet from flooding it its own ice caps. :banghead:
Hey, using hydrogen for fuel would solve that problem! (I know, i know, H2 is wildly impractical, but still!)
If you notice that diesel used to be way cheaper than gasoline. Then the EPA came out with regulations to reduce the sulfur content in order to reduce SO2 emissions. The result is the cost of diesel is more than regular unleaded now. Sulfur extraction adds to the cost of refining. Nothing is free.
I guess my point is, they could refine the diesel further to remove the particulate matter and then the consumer would pay more for the fuel instead of paying for MORE fuel and having the really expensive emissions equipment and reduced power. Which one is cheaper in the long run? who knows.
I mean, I know diesel started out as basically waste that was used a fuel in engines that no consumer wanted, and it's highly unrefined compared to gasoline. But, it's common and popular enough now that it makes a lot more sense to refine it further. It's all just hydrocarbon chains. I can't think of any reason why it should be necessarily dirtier.
That's my theoretical solution for soot, dunno about NOx. I know diesel engines just produce a lot more because of the way they burn fuel. I have no easy answers for that one, lol.
