Mirrors 1gen vs 2gen

My H2 has the 1st-gen mirrors (angled neck), and they are virtually inoperable. They do still reflect just fine, and the auto-dim works, but the power-adjust functions are all broken, and the neck of the drivers-side mirror is loose, so it sometimes gets pushed out of position. This means it can be hard to see what's behind me, among other things. I have read that the mirrors are not rebuildable, so I am planning out upgrading to the newer 2nd-gen mirrors (vertical neck). If I'm wrong about them not being rebuildable, please correct me. If I do have to buy replacements, are there multiple different models of the mirror? I want to keep the auto-dim feature and the folding capability (button folds the mirrors flat against the side of the truck for narrow parking spaces). As an aside, if it weren't for the hideous hole I'd have in the door panel from removing the original mirror, and the heartache of drilling the mounting holes, it would be neat to fit west-coast style mirrors to the truck. I think it would look good, and would be more in keeping with the aesthetic of the truck.

The new mirrors ain't cheap. I have the gen1 as you call it but luckily they still work. There are nice gen2 knockoffs on eBay but they don't fold or dim.

What are west coast style mirrors?

Doubtful you'll find brand new 2nd gen style mirrors and even used ones can go for upwards of $600 each. Some say the mirrors are interchangeable and will plug right in while others say the connector and wiring has to be changed. I can't confirm or deny any of that for you.

There's a thread on the old Elcova site entitled "Driver Side Mirror Not Folding In" where Easy Ed gives bulletted instructions on taking the old-style mirrors off and fixing the motors. See response 28 for the details and a lot of pics.
