Kinkuna Trip

Kinkuna is one of our favourite beach camping spots a bit over 4 hours north of Brisbane. One of the rare spots which not too many people know about and fewer are willing to drive that bit further to get to. My son Jake and his girlfriend Alyce were returning from their Cape York adventure, one of the iconic 4WD trips in Aussie which we couldn't get away for, so we decided to meet them at Kinkuna on their way back.

As an equal opportunity truck, the passenger gets to deflate the tyres prior to reaching the soft stuff.

While I was on a roll I thought it would good for Wendy to set up camp while I checked that the beer was cold...damn I love living dangerousy...

Being the sort of bloke that I am, I designed the camping table to be really easy to assemble so it wasn't too hard on Wendy. It also needed to be quick as I needed some where to put my beer down or it gets hot if you hold it too long.

Jake and Alyce arrived with everything covered and in red dust and their trusty swag

Big night with a feast fit for a king cooked up on the tripod ... sorry Gunner, no Queens in our camp!

To go or not to go...that is the question. The correct answer turned out to be, not to go, but I HAD to...honest!!!

A good idea would have been not to put the laptop on the floor in the back...turned out to be an expensive forget although it was 6 WEEKS old so in computer terms it was old...maybe. Apparently water coming out of the inside is generally frowned upon.

Yep, like I say, the beach is a bit tardy but hell, someone has to drive on it....

You mean no beach chair and umbrella rentals!! How crude!
Awesome, I have to go 12 miles out in the Gulf to find barrier islands with beaches that look that deserted. The H3 is not up to it so I have to boat out there.
What happened to the walking with a stick or a bobber on a pole procedure? Any gators in there?

Sweet post and pics.

I'd recommend looking into a ruggedized computer for future expeditions. A Toughbook or even a Dell ATG. I'd had one totally submerged before, let it dry and it fired right up. That was in mid-2007 and it's the same computer that I'm posting from right now.

Computer dried out slowly although it never did fire another shot in anger

Obviously Wendy doesn't know you have a remote for the camera :giggle:

Make sure you remember Valentines day tomorrow or I'll know where that table leg is going next !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm jealous. To drive on a beach here, I have to drive 7 hours to a state full of socialist pricks, and I end up on a beach full of morons. Used to be able to drive to the closest lake and park on the little beach there, but alas the bastards-that-be (gummint) have made that hard to do now as well. Only other option is to drive through a region of warring Mexican drug cartels, then drive another 6 hours to Baja California Sur. If you make it alive, there's some nice beaches to camp on

I just drive up to the mountains instead. I like trees and not having to interact with socialists and Mexican highwaymen, so it's all good :)

Thanks for sharing! You have some beautiful country down there. Like you hear most of us Yanks say, we have to drive a long ways to find desolate beech area. Fortunately, I grew up close to a few lakes that not many people know about.
