My girlfriend's sister runs a small 501c3 registered charity called Hope Lifted in Fullerton, CA. They help homeless people get back on their feet and find a way out of homelessness. Sometimes it's a matter of being an advocate and help someone who's appearance is "rough" be heard and taken seriously, other times it's a matter of providing temporary help making the rent until something more permanent can happen.
One of the folks they are working with currently is a former marine named Reece who is disabled and is waiting for the VA to be able to provide housing for him. It looks like the VA *can* help but there is a long wait before they can house him. In the mean time, Hope Lifted is trying to help him find a temporary place to stay.
One of Hope Lifted's volunteers wrote this:
"This is Colonel Richard William Fritsche. He successfully led one thousand men during the Vietnam War. He was captured as a P.O.W. for fourteen months and was kept in a four foot by four foot bamboo cage. After freeing himself from that situation and leaving the enemy lines as the only survivor, he went back to his classified duties with the NSA and was personally honored twice by President Nixon. Richard, otherwise known as Reece, then took advantage of the GI Bill for Vietnam Veterans which paid for his two degrees from Stanford University. Reece now lives as an impoverished amputee amidst his less than deserving living circumstances. His PTSD has taken a toll on his role in society. In this man, that has slept on the sidewalks of the America he courageously fought for, I have found great honor and gratitude."
Hope Lifted is a small faith based charity. All donations are passed on 100% to those they are trying to help. Donations are tax deductible.
