2007 hummer h3X I am pulling a 3000 lb trailer loaded with the 35'' tires and it's sloooow. I was thinking of changing differential gears. what is the lowest gear that you Would recommend. with stock tires it tows much better but it could be better. I having been thinking of selling the H3 but I really love it and don't really want to part with it. I wished I bought the Alpha.
Thank

Your current gearing plus the 5.3L is as best as you can get with the stock front end....

I towed a 3200 pound trailer back from Denver to Moab, everyone passed me going up and down the major passes. I then took took a trip to Zion NP. Heading into the San Rafael swell from the west is a steady, low grade incline you hardly notice; however, the H3 sure did and it was the first time I ever encountered the engine actually starting to overheat and it was in November, not July.

When I arrived back in Moab, I decided it was time to get something that was really designed to tow and purchased a Silverado.

Mine was a 5-cyl with stock tires.
My opinon is those 5 bangers in a vehicle as heavy and as aerodynamic as a wall are just not designed to pull a heavy trailer; regardless of what they are rated at. And really for for highway driving, dropping down in gearing will be better.

The H3 with the 5 does okay for what it is, but it does get hot!! We used the trailer for a long beach trip a few years ago when each of the kids took friends and we took the dog. I chose routes to minimize the cities and taller hill. While towing with it can be done, it takes patience and accepting the slow trip.

Going to 35’s with the five cylinder makes extended towing something I really don’t want to do.

It's amazing how much better the Alpha tows, though it still doesn't do as well as a good truck of course. My trip to Colorado a couple months ago was to pick up several hundred pounds of old restaurant equipment from my mom (20qt Hobart mixer, 6 burner stove/oven, stainless steel prep table, a couple speed racks, and a bunch of other random stuff). I was surprised how well it did bringing that all back, especially since I took I70 and that has a lot of steep climbs.

The trailer was my M101A2 which even with a commercial axle isn't the lightest thing. And the speed racks went on in such a way that they were basically sails catching the wind, I ended up adding a strap yo the top to brace them so that they wouldn't collapse from the wind.

I do think I could do better with the 4.56 gears though, it'd be just enough a boost to make it right about where I want it for towing.

Just not really a rig designed for a lot of towing. The Alpha with 35's, 4.56 and a tune does all right with a 5000 lb trailer but I will still get the one finger salute on a grade by someone in a full size dually towing a 35ft house behind them.
