This is the movie adaptation of retired US Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell's book 'Lone Survivor'. Lone Survivor is Luttrell's recollection of operation Red Wings which was a recon mission of four US Navy SEALs in the Afghan mountains. Their target was a taliban leader ahmad shah. during their recon they came across three goat herders, they let them go since they were civilians even though they knew they would probably inform the taliban of their presence near the village shah was at and where they were at. sometime later they were flanked on three sides by the taliban with the only way away from them being down a near vertical mountain. It was four US Navy SEALs against 200 taliban, 80+ confirmed taliban killed by the original reports. but the redacted (political) version was that the taliban had only a force of 80 against the four SEALs. only one of the four SEALs survived and that was Marcus Luttrell, hence Lone Survivor. His three brother SEALs that didnt make it were Matthew Axelson, Danny Dietz and Michael Murphy. Throughout the firefight the four SEALs had to jump down the mountainside to get to new ground to get to better cover. this would result in falling and tumbling down the mountain, sometimes watching some of their gear fly off past them somewhere. Their military communications were down and or destroyed during the firefight. at one point Team Leader Michael Murphy made the decision to expose himself by stepping onto the boulder he was taking cover behind so that he could use his satellite phone to call his Team's HQ back in Virginia to call in for support. Murphy had already taken multiple hits before this call and took multiple more as he made the call. Michael Murphy would later earn the Medal of Honor for this selfless act (this is the first time that a Predator drone was used as a witness to make Michael Murphy eligible for the Medal of Honor since only Marcus Luttrell had survived this devasting mission)
After Michael Murphy's call,a QRF (Quick Reaction Force) was established but delayed. but unfortunately eight US Navy SEALs and eight US Army Night Stalkers (160th SOAR; Operators that help other Operators infiltrate and exfiltrate for their missions) loaded up on one of the Chinooks was shot down by a RPG and all 16 of the operators did not survive. the rest of the QRF returned to base after that loss, especially considering the Commander of the SEALs was on that chinook 'Turbine 33' that was lost. June 28, 2005 ended up being the worst day in Spec OPs, Navy SEAL and Army Night Stalker history with a loss of 19 Operators, 11 being Navy SEALs and 8 being Army Night Stalkers (until August 6, 2011 when another Chinook was shot down, but this time carrying 17 Navy SEALs, 3 Navy Special Warfare and 5 Air Force Spec Ops in addition to 13 others)
