Emergency front CV trail fix

I've been working the last 2 weeks straight and I got bored last weekend. I took an old busted front CV, complements of Moab, and removed the center section and milled the flanges down. I figured they can be used to get out of a jam in 3 wheel drive mode without spilling the axle fluid everywhere. Not sure the outboard is necessary since the hub bearings are a sealed 1 piece design.

Seems like a good idea to me. I need to do that with one of mine. I agree that the outer portion is probably unnecessary.

yes outer shaft is also needed, at least on the H2, not sure about the H3. I had already used my spare shaft and had a second shaft break, so I drove less than 3 miles in my H2 at highway speed without one of the shafts and almost had the outer hub bearing and wheel separate from the hub. It warped the brake rotor, overheated the abs sensor, and obviously destroyed the hub. Extra $60 shaft cost me over $500. I thought about doing exactly what rascole did, but it was easier to just carry two spare shafts for me.

Definitely need outer installed that provides preload on the bearings. The only thing that holds them together without a CV is a small overlapping lip. I've seen people lose wheels before because they thought unit bearings were something special that didn't require a shaft to rotate on and provide proper preload.

Good to know about the preload. How does a front hub differ in a 2WD application? I just assumed they used the same bearing, just one was splined for the axle shaft. I've swapped hubs on other GM trucks, but they've all been 4WD.

Interesting I exploded outboard CV on H2 and H3T on the trail
(Didn't feel like changing it) and then drove home ~100 mi each time.
Then swapped it at my convince.
