Camel Trophy... The good old days.

I think all the off-road enthusiast should be appreciated for this kind of events. I loved Camel Trophy before the Land Rovers where taken out.
Just wanted to share this video with everyone. Hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.

I was one the few lucky ones to actually participate. I was in the 1998 Tierra del Fuego edition. You could say that the Camel Trophy for all modern 4x4 adventures and competitions. Especially in my case. It motivated me to go on and participate in other events like Rainforest Challenge and Outback Challenge. It's a true shame it no longer exist because it really was a once in a lifetime experience. Here's some pics from my edition:

No. She was from a different year. You have to remember there were 40 participants each year during 20 years. It's hard to know all the participants.

In the US, the only way to know about the selections was by owning a Land Rover or knowing somebody affiliated. Land Rover NA had the Camel Trophy monopoly and ran the selections. In the other countries it was a much bigger deal and you heard and read about it just about everywhere. It was a selection process un each country that cut the participants by half each time till there were only 4 left. Those 4 were would the represent their country in the international selections along with all the other participants from the other countries. There they would decide who the 2 participants that were going to go to the final in their country's vehicle for the event.

This was the exact reason I got into off roading, the ultimate in adventure travel. Same here, too bad its no more or there's nothing like it now. Great video.

I'll have to ask her what years she participated, I know she was chosen for 2 years in a row. Edit: nope - only once in 1995. Still a very high honor to be chosen as a Female Driver for the event!

You can only be chosen once, as you may have found out. This gives others a chance. First woman ever was from Canary Islands. Only all girl team ever was from Spain on last edition. One of those girls went on to compete in Trophee des Gazelles (all girls 4x4 adventure competition) with my cousin and won.

I recently got to go to a Camel Trophy presentation from Bill Burke ('91 US team) in Portland...truly an amazing event, and I was shocked at the rigorous qualification process...think Amazing Race combined with Offroading... he told us about some of the physical challenges just in the qualifying - 6 minute miles, 72 hrs without sleep, physical challenges followed by brain games...truly amazed and just the qualifying rounds.

Also, a little off-topic, Emily Miller competed in the Trophes des Gazelles in an H3 a couple years ago...only US team and they came in 2nd place. Basically a bone stock H3 - they had planned some upgrades, but had some logistics issues and ended up running the race in a stock H3 (I think they had to replace a shock). Pretty amazing race - all navigation done by hand, teams get to choose routes from checkpoint to checkpoint...truly amazing stuff and glad they still put on the race.

Both are amazing events. Shame the Camel Trophy was ruined by an idiot named Nick Horn. Bebe you really need to hone down your map reading and compass navigation skills. Sand driving is a must too. All tips from my cousin.

Rod Hall and Emily Miller do a training in Reno every year. Rox is an awesome map reader/navigator, and we will be learning the old school way of Navigation. I've done a good amount of Sand driving, rocks, water, washes etc as has she (all with Rod Hall in Reno over the years). I know it's brutal, but I still wish it was Camel - it's about as close as you can get though.

Nick Horn, I'll have to look that up, just because I would like to know.

USA Gazelles are actively recruiting. We'll see how it goes. I'll never get Rox in an H3 (she doesn't like them), but it's not like we don't have a few vehicles between us to choose from. :giggle:

The last USA Gazelles vehicle was an FJ cruiser if I'm not mistaken. Just saw it at the South Eastern Overland Rally.
