Sup guys. I'm Justin. Friends call me Breezy (last name = Breeland). I'm a Subaru lover. I love small cars. I love AWD and going fast. But I'm looking at getting a H3 next year as a new step. I enjoyed the VX but could use something bigger and more practical. I live in the UP of Michigan. 300+ inches of snow each year. So I'm hear to read, learn, watch and understand the H3 and then will be looking to buy one sometime next fall.

HUMMERADDICT referred me from the VX.info forum.

I appreciate any and all suggestions for what to look for or look out for.

welcome to the group, there are plenty of guys here that can give you information.

I have a question are you thinking of getting this H3 as a Daily Driver (DD) or are you going to use it as a off-road/winter vehicle?

because if you like speed the Hummer is not going to be the vehicle for you, it is as aerodynamic as a brick.

Welcome to H4O, Breezy. Do you have any specific questions? The leap from a VX to an H3 will certainly be different...but I don't think you'll miss the VX too much after a few romps in the 3.

Heck, you may find the rear visibility in the H3 is actually BETTER than the VX. Having almost pulled the trigger on one a few years before my H3T, I learned a bit about them. Neat little rigs. I'd love to see some pics!

Welcome from SoCal/TX. The Vehicross is pretty cool. I think you will like the H3. If you want some speed probably should look for a Championship Edition or Alpha.

I have become aware that the H3 is not a ticket to speed, which I think will be good for me. It might keep me from driving so aggressively and squealing my tires every time I take off from a stop. My question right now would be for comments on the reliability of the H3 mechanically and cosmetically. I have not been in one (plan on test driving over Christmas break), and I have never owned a GM product. How is the drivetrain/engine? Is the vehicle lots of cheap plastic or quality material and craftsmanship? I am originally from Tennessee and like to travel there several times a year. Apart from the fuel economy, does it travel well and is very comfortable?

I plan on purchasing an H3 Alpha with the Adventure package. Can someone tell me about the championship edition? I have not heard of that. What differences are between them?

Furthermore, I love "rescuing and recovering" people and vehicles. I loved using the VX and even my Subaru before that for pulling people out of ditches all winter long. I would eventually want to load up with lots of outside lighting and potentially nice brushbar with a winch. Does anyone else have similar hobbies/interest and setup? I'd love to see some pictures and get some ideas/suggestions for products. This is all I have for now. Enjoy the VX pics! She was my baby.

Thanks for all the welcoming, and yes, the would be my DD. After graduating and paying off school, I will still buy an STI, so then that would be the DD probably. But for a few years, the H3 would be my only vehicle.

Wecome to the forum.

Here's a list of what come on the H3 Championship Edition

Standard equipment:
5.3L V8 w/ auto
Off-Road suspension package (front and rear Eaton lockers, 4:1 transfer case, cast-iron front diff)
Red brake calipers & specially-tuned shocks
Exclusive ultra silver metallic exterior color
Body colored grille
Exclusive hood decal
Fender Flare Extensions
16 x 17.5-in aluminum wheels
Cloth interior
Rocker panel protection
OEM under carriage shields/skid plates
Black Brush guard

The CE was an alpha adventure with a few more factory add-ons (mostly cosmetic as opposed to performance related - with the exception of the additional UCP protection and rock sliders).

Welcome to the forum. You will be able to find allot of useful info here. And I think switching from VX to H3 Alpha will not be a problem. H3 is not a race horse but fairly nimble for it's class. I switched from Nissan 240sx and after some adjustment I LOVE driving my H3. BTW. I think VX is an awesome rig and way underrated.

Welcome to the forums. I've always like those VX's and thought they would make a neat dedicated trail rig. I just haven't looked in to how much work would be required to make on as such.

Hey Breezy, welcome aboard. As you now know, Tech grad here and living in lower MI now. You will enjoy the 3. If you are coming through lower MI on break or whatever let me know and you can come check mine out. (2006 I5 adv) but the looks, buttons and stuff will be very similar to the alpha.

Glad to see you made it over Justin. Those pics of your Proton are some of the best from the vx forum. I'd say the H3 is a very reliable DD. Some people have had a few issues which you'll read about here. But its mostly things that could happen to any car, IMHO! Also, most people on this forum wheel their Hummers pretty heavily, so it would obviously lead to having more mechanical setbacks. :)

Avoid the 2006 H3 and you will be fine.

Bah! Mine is great, and I have no complaints.

@Breezy

This is the best vehicle I have ever owned, I love every bit about it, and if you get the chance get the Adventure Package and The Luxury Package. Premium sound (factory sub woofer and it rock), and Lockers (Off-road they are invaluable) are extremely desirable.

Thanks for the tip Schwarttzy! My only problem will be finding all the options I want in one H3 that is reasonably priced.

@ArtHummer, my girlfriend (now ex) who I was planning to propose to lives 5 hours away and on a college budget I couldn't afford the gas to visit her very often like I wanted to in the VX (similar mpg as the H3 I assume), so I sold the VX for my current 2003 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V. I could then afford the gas to visit her and take the excess money and put it towards an engagement ring. She dropped everything and left right after I bought the Sentra after selling the VX. So now this is where I am at. Haha.

But I LOOOOVE driving in the snow. I wish I could drive in snow all year round. I can't do that in my FWD Sentra. And I love pulling anyone out of a ditch in winter that I see as I drive by. I love being able to go out and know I can get to where ever I need to be no matter what the conditions are. I love the security of being able to get to any friends or family that need my help in a vehicle that is completely capable to get me there and potentially even recover their vehicle. I kinda want to run my own little side recovery service so to speak. :) That's why I'm looking at the H3. Because it seems capable of all that, plus roomy and comfortable compared to what I have now and have owned before.

Man, that sucks that she did that to you. But on the bright side, the money that you where saving for the ring you can dump on getting a nice H3. No matter what happens, happens for a good reason. Good luck with finding a new toy and keep us posted.

Welcome to H4O Justin. Very nice VX Shame you had to get rid of the it. I got my H3 to take up to the snow but, in almost 2 years of owning it has not yet seen snow.

Good luck with your search.

Avoid the 2006 H3 and you will be fine.

The ALPHA is a great truck, you will be very happy with it. If you can find an adventure, even better!

WOW calm down on the hatin LOL, I have the said 06' H3 and and I have no issues with it mechanically, I do get decent MPG (20 vs ur 16), and I dont see what is soo bad about it.
the only thing that I can grant you with the alpha is that you have a V8 and I have an I5, I would personally rather have a diesel than either.
