I have participated in black friday but I am trying to decide what tool set I should pick up before the run tomorrow. I have been snapping my husky home depot **** lately...Is craftsman better? I want snap on but its too expensive.

Lifetime warranty at sears

Do you think I should jump on it and which set? 309 pc without the box or 260 pc with the box?

I got the set with box a couple of years ago for maybe a tad less.

Satisified with everything but the ratchets.

One was dead on arrival (locked up) and I killed another two weeks later (stripped it out).

Walked in the store with the broken ones and walked out with new replacments (which I upgraded later).

With a few additions, it is a pretty nice kit for the back of the truck.

Extensions, u-joints, a brace of screwdrivers and an assortment of pliers....etc., etc., etc..

You could do worse.

That sucks Hans...my girlfriend wants me to "help" her and her friend shop tonight at midnight. Which means standing in lines like a schmuck while they shop. Not sure what I'm gonna do yet seeing I am going on an offroad run tomorrow and need to get up early.

Luckily for me I got the craftsman 309 piece set! It's without a box but my neighbors always get rid of toolboxes and end up giving them to me so ill have a box soon enough. I never had a full set, I've always pieced **** together. Now that I have a big set I'm stoked! Now I will only have to buy speciality tools when those kind of jobs come up

Sears is on the Autozone level with their lifetime warranty in my book. All it means is that when their junk breaks, you've got to dig up the receipt and take it back. The difference is with Autozone you've also got to remove the broken junk first and then figure out a way to take it back while your ride is broken. I'm past dealing with that crap, I'll pay a little more now to get quality I can trust.
Too many Craftsman tools have broken on me to trust buying that junk any more.
Lots of other good brands out there, not just Snap-On. I've got some SK stuff that is really nice.

I got some Craftsman tools that I have had from about 1965 going forward. Back then that was about the only good source except maybe Thorsen at local rural hardware grain and feed stores. It was also good about the lifetime warranty at Sears. My wrenches still work.
The large power tools now have lots of plastic parts that are metal on mine.
Of course you know Sears did not make anything and I wonder if their out sourcing has gone other places from back then?
Some newer ratchets from 10 years ago did not last long, but were replaced.

06h3 what are you breaking? Are you using standard sockets with air tools?

Craftsman is not that bad and most of the tools like sockets and wrenches will last for some time. To exchange it you don't need the receipt, any sears store will exchange without asking... Craftsman ratchets are absolute crap. Their 1/4 ratchet is good only for license plate screws (even then it will brake in the month). If you on the budget you can get this set, but get the the ratchets from some better companies like Stap-On or Matco. You will save yourself a headache.

For all the Power/air tool you can't go wrong with "Ingersoll Rand". Best air tools I ever owned.

Well...I ended up running past Lowe's today and I got a mechanic's tool set (the $99 sale one) and a B&D power drill/driver and a few other goodies. Walked out about $170 lighter... :wink:

No more borrowing tools for me!

I have all Craftsman tools at home and have never had any issues in build quality or exchanging the broken items for new. The most recent thing I had was a broken 5/8 elbow ratcheting wrench, it's a new set so they don't have spares but they opened a new package for nothing and sent me on my way. The only way I have ever blown up the ratchets is by putting a 3+ foot pipe on the end of 'em; I brought those in and no questions asked left with a new one, one employee even knew what happened and just laughed about it and I got a new one. They just came out with a few new ratchets that I am probably going to try.

At work we have mostly snap-on and some of those tools inevitably get treated pretty rough. The most I see break are scribes and screwdrivers but that's understandable.

Maybe your Sears is just dumb but I've been extremely happy with every Craftsman tool I have had; comparing them to Autozone and the like seems pretty unbelievable to me. I got some 200 piece set a few years ago, those tools slowly got lost in the garage and blended with my roommates so I recent bought the 260 or 360 piece set about 10 months ago and haven't had anything break.

I did forget about the Craftsman ratchets--all of mine require some degree of tongue to the left :wink: sort of work to get them to actually work as a ratchet. One of my last new Craftsman sockets cracked as soon as I put it on the nut and attempted to turn with literally no pressure on it. I just don't have patience for that with anything I work with, especially if it's the only kind of that tool that I have on hand. In my experience, the comparison to Autozone parts is very much right on.
I do agree about the older CM tools, they were built to last, so if you're lucky enough to have them, cool.
I did forget about the not needing a receipt on the CM stuff, it is cool you can just bring your broken junk back and swap it. My probelm is I live quite a distance from the nearest Sears, so I'll continue to buy tools I don't need to worry about swapping under any kind of warranty!

Thanks for the review twin...I will run these until they break and get them replaced. One day when I have more money I will buy better tools if these give me issues.

I have had craftsmen tools since I was 16. My father bought my first set. I still use craftsmen tools today. I don't think you can go wrong with their sockets and wrenches. Their channel lock style pliers and vice grips suck. It is hard to find a rachet that compares to my fine toothed snap on ratchets. The screwdrivers are decent but will break with misuse. For pliers I would look at channel lock brand, for side cutters I usual buy channel lock brand too.

I got myself a $38 LG Blu-Ray player at Wal-Mart, along with 11 blu-rays, most of which were only $3.96. I got the entire Fast & Furious run, along with Captain America, Iron Man and a bunch of others. My favorite items on Black Friday are usually the cheap movies.

I got a rebuilt diff mount from Preferred Chassis Fabrication! Passenger side one is now done; driver's side still to be done.

We were working on a permanent solution where the halfshaft would not have to be removed by the driveway mechanic to get it replaced - repair it while on the truck. For Dwaine it was easy with access to a torch and air chisel to burn out and cut out the old bushing. He then milled down poly bushings from stock and fabbed a new washer and put it back together.

We were hoping there was a way to get the diff plate off the truck without pulling the halfshaft but that may not be possible, or at least not reasonable. He's out of poly stock right now but may be able to help you out soon. I still need to do my driver's side but I'll be replacing the halfshaft and axle seal at the same time anyway.

Essentially, I have a one-off R&D version.

One was an original and went out, now the other one is gone...
