Attention Gun Nuts (Yea.. all of you)

I'm thinking about picking up a Walther P99 for a new carry weapon. I've picked them up and shot about 20 rounds. I like the way it feels in my hand and the size of the gun. What are your thoughts on this gun? Are there any that are comparable in price and size that I should try before I buy a P99?

Nano? PF-9? M&P?

Glock 23 for me. Semi-compact. 40 caliber. Easily concealable with an untucked shirt. Simple to use and operate, very safe to carry. However, I do think the 40 caliber has a bit more kick in this gun vs other calibers or guns.

I carry a Sig P238 when I need a smaller gun but as a. 380 it doesn't have the same stopping power.

I don't know anything about the Walthers

Also, the new Springfield XDS 45 is intriguing. Very small but is a 45. Lots of recoil is the drawback

I can't comment on the P99, but I carry an M&P 9c. Very compact and easily concealed. 12+1 capacity.

It's a bit tight for large hands, but it comes with an extended mag (no added capacity, only an extended pinkie rest). Mine does not have a safety, but I believe it is an option. No complaints. I believe I've had one jam out of 2,000-3,000 rounds fired.

Can't comment on P99, or glock. The XDsc comes in 9 and 40. I have the 9mm 13+1. Shoots great. I also have a Sig Seur P938 6+1. It's 9mm, light wieght, and easily concealable, comes with night sights, and is the 1911 format.

Springfield Armory also has the XDs. It's a single stack 45cal, 6+1. Soon they should be releasing a 9mm version and next spring sometime the 40cal version.

Glocks are nice IMOP they are like the Honda's of guns: reliable, functional, no extras, plain looking.

I have the Walther P99 .40S&W. I think it is one of the best cary guns around. It has a lot of safety features, is very slim (not a bunch of crap sticking out the sides to hang up on), can tell if it is loaded or cocked in zero light by feel, and it feels right in my hand wich makes it real accurite for me. I think the best gun for someone is one that has a good reputation for not malfunctioning, fits their grip naturally, and provides a good sense of security to the person carrying it.
I bought mine when they first came out like 13 years ago. I have caried Glock, Browning High-power, Beretta M9, and Sig P220. All great guns, but it is up to you and how it fits naturally in your hand. The Sig P220 would be my second choice because of accuracy and .45 cal brings a little bit more thump. The .40 is really good for velocity wich creats a lot of hydrostatic shock when it hits soft targets. 9mm is good for shooting cans and making noise.

If it is comfortable for you to shoot, then get it. Really hard for anyone else to determine if a gun is for you or not.

What Doug said. Personally I don't like Glocks but many do. Main thing is what is comfortable for you and what you can control.

Being that your not in CA , I would look into the micro desert eagle .380. Very concealable and can fit inside a cowboy boot and very accurate ! One of my favorite carry pieces. Here's a link, check it out .

I bought a Glock 17 9mm more than a dozen years ago. Never gave the gun much thought and didnt shoot it much. My son shot it in a couple IPSC pistol race competitions and was nearly the only competitor that didnt have a gun malfunction either day. I'm not a huge fan of autoloader pistols for self defense and usually consider revolvers more fool proof but i think the Glocks are changing my mind. They are brutally simple in design also.

I seriously considered a P99 and ended up getting a G26. The P99 is thinner (at least in 9mm) but the shape of the Glock works better for me for CC. The fact that I carry a Glock at work and get a discount as an armorer swayed me more to the Glock. The P99 is nice but I think my next subcompact will be a Nano.

I'd always had Ruger's, 9 & 45mm were my favorites, then I went shooting with a buddy who had a Glock and it felt like a Cadillac compared to a Chevy sedan.
These guys are right, grip and reliability are most important. Then just practice with it and get used to it being your main tool so you can do everything by feel even if it were pitch black. Nothing sucks more than fumbling with a gun when it counts the most!

As for size--it's already been said, the 9mm was fun for target plunking, but the .45 made me feel all warm and fuzzy.

I had a Glock 27 40cal, traded it for my XD 40 love it. I also have a P22 thats for fun when i go fishing.

I have a lot of carry pieces and for many years my Colt 1911 combat commander in .45 was my favorite. A couple months back I picked up a Ruger SR9c (9mm). I have over 1,000 round through it at this point without a signal issue. I can CC with the small 10+1 magazine or put the full size 17+1 magazine in and it will still have a smaller CC foot print then the Colt had with 7+1. It is unbelievably easy to shoot. The least amount of recoil of any of the guns I own. My BUG is a Sig P238 .380. I own a Walther PPK/s in .380 and the quality is great. My S&W 357 mag snub noise revolver is a beast...I'm gona stop now...

Glocks are very reliable guns they along W/ HK & Colt did wonderful toture test when competing for a socom contract. Glock & HK did great, I'm a HK guy but a Glock is just as reliable I just don't like the grip angle they have. I have 3 HK handguns (all 40cal) 2 of which are their compact models but as a small every day CC gun I usually end up using my Keltec P11, 9mm & can use a 13rnd S&W 59 series mag as a back up. And none of them have had any malfunctions that weren't ammo related.

The Nano is what I'm actually leaning towards now.
