I used to have a set of Martin Logan Aerius i's, but Todd stole them from me. I used to build tube amps as well... haven't done so in a while, but I will probably get back into it when the K5 is done. I'm gettin' too old to work on trucks all the time
Best sounding amp I have ever built used the now-discontinued SV811-10 triode in a single-ended configuration. Here's a pic of said tube:

That amp is not mine - I posted it just to show what a lit GM70 looks like. It is the large tube on the left.
Here's some more cool amps. This one uses what appears to be push-pull 807 transmitting triodes. The small tube on the right is a twin triode, used as the preamp and phase splitter/driver, and the two tubes in the rear of the amp are full wave vacuum rectifiers:

This is a Manley Stingray, which is a stereo amp using 4 EL84 (aka 6BQ5) pentodes per channel:
These are KT88's mounted upside down, which is typical for a guitar amplifier (this is a Traynor YBA200). You will often see a deep blue glow on the inside of the glass of many power tubes. This is caused by high speed electrons (400eV or more) colliding with the glass, causing alloying elements in the glass to fluoresce. Besides their spectacularly awesome sound, the cool appearance is another reason I like toooooobs!

Some guys build gear with truly vintage tubes. This is an 801A (back) driving a 75TL(front):
Power supply uses a quartet of 866A mercury vapor rectifiers in a full wave bridge configuration. The liquid droplets on the inside of the glass near the top are drops of condensed mercury:
Here's an 833A transmitting tube. At full power, the plate will glow red. You can see the red spot in this pic. Remember, vacuum tubes have no air in them, so the only way they can dissipate heat is via radiation:
Here's an amp using 6C4's driving 1625 transmitting tubes. Again note the blue glow caused by electron collisions with the glass envelope:
Here's a pic of some SED El34's in operation. Note the blue glow on the interior surface of the plate (anode). Again, this is fluorescence caused by high velocity electron impacts exciting elements in the metal:
