Another Tire Question

I have stock size tires on my 06 Adventure 285 75r 16. I'm fine with the height but I would like to go a little wider when these New Firestones that came on my truck wear out. Do they make a wider tire that will fit our stock 16" rims? Maybe a 285 85r 16? Is there a tire this size? And if there is will it fit our rims and give the proper tire connection to the deck?

85 is more narrow than 75.

you would need a 295 70 or a 305 75

From Tire Rack:
[h=3]Section Width[/h]Following the letter(s) that identify the type of vehicle and/or type of service for which the tire was designed, the three-digit numeric portion identifies the tire's "Section Width" (cross section) in millimeters.
P225/50R16 91S
The 225 indicates this tire is 225 millimeters across from the widest point of its outer sidewall to the widest point of its inner sidewall when mounted and measured on a specified width wheel. This measurement is also referred to as the tire's section width. Because many people think of measurements in inches, the 225mm can be converted to inches by dividing the section width in millimeters by 25.4 (the number of millimeters per inch).
225mm / 25.4 = 8.86"

Sidewall Aspect Ratio

Typically following the three digits identifying the tire's Section Width in millimeters is a two-digit number that identifies the tire's profile or aspect ratio.
P225/50R16 91S
The 50 indicates that this tire size's sidewall height (from rim to tread) is 50% of its section width. The measurement is the tire's section height, and also referred to as the tire's series, profile or aspect ratio. The higher the number, the taller the sidewall; the lower the number, the lower the sidewall. We know that this tire size's section width is 225mm and that its section height is 50% of 225mm. By converting the 225mm to inches (225 / 25.4 = 8.86") and multiplying it by 50% (.50) we confirm that this tire size results in a tire section height of 4.43". If this tire were a P225/70R16 size, our calculation would confirm that the size would result in a section height of 6.20", approximately a 1.8-inch taller sidewall.

So those 2 larger wider tire sizes will fit our 16" stock rims ok?

305 70 16

315 75 16

Awesome explanation Gents! Thank you very much!

My opinion, we have some of the best people in the world on this site! I truly mean that!

Hmmm.... the tire width listed for my Toyo MTs is 12.2.... (305/70 16s)

I'm going to 315/75 16s by the end of May (there's a great deal on Kumho mt tires)

I didn't see any Duratracks in 305 70 16.......I did find the Firestone Destination MT in that size good reviews and lighter than the Kumbos @ 62 lbs ea. I have on my truck now Firestone Destination AT 285 75r 16. I live on a dirt road and the tread width on them hold a ton of small stones! Tires are full of stones flying out all the time.....:(

My numbers came from Goodyear Duratrac(s) listed on Tire Rack.

yes but they should all the be same.... I got mine from the Toyo site; maybe they're measuring the widest part?

I walked downstairs and measured, the tread is 10" wide (more like 9 7/8"), but the section width is 12+"

and toyos are heavy - they're load range E with 3 ply sidewalls... which is another reason I'm going with Kumhos, they're load range D, thus lighter

right.... I'd never dream of towing huge amounts of weight... and never even think about hauling a diesel, 4x4 Suburban on a 20' tilt car trailer... nope, never do anything like that.

To superbuickguy: so it is safe to say that the stock 16" wheels on or H3's will hold the 305 70 16 and give proper tread connection to the deck for everyday driving right sir?

I drove mine with 305s for 20k miles before I bought the new wheels - so yes, they're fine (until you hit a log at 30 mph and 10 psi in your tires... then the rims aren't so fine)

I looked it up on some other Hummer Forums and a lot of guys are saying the tire shops won't mount a 305 70 16 or a 315 75 16 on stock H3 rims. I guess our rims are 7.5 w is this correct? They are saying those tire sizes need to have at least a 8" rim. So if this is true that they won't mount them, what is a good off set for our H3? 20? 30? It will give me an excuse to buy new wheels!

Thanks man...so if I understand correct the 75 it stands for the wide of the tire right ??? And the lower the number the wider the tire is right...if so what would be the widest that u can safely mount on the oem rim..

I thought the first number is the width of the tire... 315mm wide... And the second number is the height of the sidewall which is a percentage of the width... 75% of 315mm. And the last number is the rim size.

Just a month ago he was asking questions about tire pressure, now he knows about aspect sizes.... our boy has grown up so quickly, *sniff* :giggle:
