I just went and saw act of valor with my dad. First off thankyou to all of our servicemen and women. Also for those of you who haven't seen it, i highly recommend it.

Don't like Hollywood at all. "Silent Professional" is supposed to mean something. Might be a great movie, but I don't like the thought of being used by politicians for elections.

Can't stand Hollywood or the liberal know it all idiots that make their living there. I haven't it or heard from any friends who have seen it. Looks like a movie I might like.

Took my oldest son to see it with me last night. He is a teenager (16) and has been driving me nuts lately. We've spent much time talking about honor, and integrity, and having the courage to do what's right. I've been trying to convince him that whatever he chooses to do with his life... he should stand for what he believes in and make his family proud. His last name will become valuable to him in this world.

I had tears running down my face at the end of that movie. I think my kid understood that the conversations I've been having with him... come from the heart.

I don't know about the Hollywood influence in this flick, and the acting was not great, my expectations weren't real high going in... but I liked that movie a lot. Maybe due in large part to the conversations I've been having with my kid... but whatever... right place - right time.

I'd highly recommend this movie to the kind of people that could identify with the subject matter.

Are you under the impression that Hollywood is the only fact distorter? Every news cast you see, newspaper or magazine you read, every documentary you see (especially every "reality show" most think are real) is carefully crafted to make a point. At least movies are supposed to be stories...it's when the other "fact" outlets that are made up that should flip people out.

Jessica Lynch comes to mind.

Not under that impression at all. I know what propaganda is and I know that it's used every day, in every media source. I also know what group is behind it, and what group is behind them. Actually, this goes at least three layers deep. Thanks for checking.

Regardless of what hollywood's intentions were, the movie had quite the moving effect. When the film ended, not a soul was talking in the theater, everyone was dead quiet. I think i touched people on more ways than they know.

Sadly that is prevalent in so much of our world today. As long as one is aware of it, I believe one can take good out of any situation, whether it be knowledge, a laugh or a smile... So I will be going to see it, knowing there might be hidden agenda's. I try to pay no mind.. When one reacts, one plays into the hand of the one pulling the strings..

I am glad some of you are enjoying the movie. I have not seen it yet but want to (I have several friends who worked on it, and it was all shot using dslr's). The dp is the same guy who shot Terminator Salvation. Not my cup o tea to work on, but watching it will be fun.

Several are alluding to a hidden agenda with this movie, is there some kind of subversive message to look forward to? What is this movie saying to you? I heard the seals themselves were in it as well as very involved in the shooting.

We have different politics, so we'll let that part lie to preserve decorum.

The thing that angers me about this movie the most is the violation of a long-standing code in the community. Special ops are supposed to be "silent professionals." That means, we do things behind the scenes without seeking personal glory or fame. The Department of the Navy appears to have recently changed their minds on this code of conduct. Using real operators will endanger them, their families, inadvertantly shows our tactics, equipment, etc. I guess walking on the red carpet means more to them than the code and the community.

Maybe I'm just old-school and need to retire...the military is changing in ways that I don't like at all.

Ah...now I see one of your points. I get that. I too hate that everyone now seems to have a desire to be recognized. Were there things, equipment, or techniques in the film tbat have never been seen before or could not be learned in the weekend warrior classes so many of my friends love to take? Blackhawk Down and Hurt Locker took similar peeks behind the curtain. I find tbat peek fascinating and it makes me appreciate our men and women in uniform even more for what tbey do for us.

It's the subversive message that you see that has me intrigued.

And I do not think your hatred of "glory hounding" is old and outdated...as you say, you are old school, and sometimes tbat is the best school. I am with you there.

Well, "hurt locker" is safe from revealing any of our real TTP's. It is a false glorification of the real job which is 99% boredom and training & 1% "fresh underwear needed".... Not that I would know....but I can tell you nobody unless in extreme circumstance goes out in a bomb suit to "diffuse" an IED in a warzone, LOL. Fun movie though, as Im sure "Act of valor" is.

Charlie Sheen-Winning then and now.

the most realistic portrayal so far!

I don't think Hurt Locker made anyone want to be EOD...but it's funny how these guys are portrayed in the movies/tv shows. I just worked on an episode of NCIS-LA where the EOD guys were kinda this stereotype. I guess if everything was shown as it really is then no one would want to tune in.

When we tell people we like to offroad our trucks...in their mind they see this:

Well, civilian EOD and their military counterparts have very different goals. One side is ordered to protect the public and their property... the other side just wants to come home alive with all their fingers and toes. A Navy EOD for example will see more in an average day in theater than a police bomb tech will see in their career...different ballgame. I agree playing it safe doesnt sell tickets...and I do love a good war movie. Sounds like you have a fun job. And one more thing just to be clear..... God bless all who serve-or have served, both civilian and military. I am getting you guys off subject....Im going to have to go see it this afternoon. I'll chime in later...

Paladine I can completely relate to your point of view and I respect where you're coming from with it.

I've spent some time in Coronado myself.

The Navy's goals and agenda with this movie may not be totally pristine... who knows maybe recruits and funding were thoughts being driven behind the scenes... I don't think they meant to undermine the code or the community.

We know there are real life missions that take place. Maybe letting the public in on some of this perspective insures a strong spec ops community for the future. When we raised the flag on Suribachi it was said it insured the future of the Corps for the next 500 years...

The spec ops community didn't even show pictures of Bin-Ladens dead body (although I for one would have liked to see them)... maybe a fictional account of Acts of Valor isn't so bad.

It is cool to show the public a view they might not realize otherwise.

I know I've read enough books about the community to realize this information is all already out there... but many people who might not read a book... will go see a 2 hour movie. There are some good reasons to see something that has a worthwhile message.
