A Photography Thread For The Rest Of Us (Compact / PS Cams)

I initially posted for some camera advice over in this thread (http://www.hummer4x4offroad.com/forum/showthread.php?977-Photography&highlight=photography), but really felt bad junking up their thread with my clearly amateur questions. This thread isn't intended for the guys like Nugget, Hunner, and f5-- it's for the rest of us. I've always enjoyed photography, but never got into or even had an interest in owning an SLR. I just don't want to deal with the hassle. My ancient Canon PowerShot G5 died after years and I was trying to decide what to replace it with. Frankly, I probably would have been happy with another G5, but the more I read the more I liked about the Powershot G1X so I ordered one of those. Don't have it yet, but eager to get it and try it out.

Do you edit the photos taken with the point and shoot? Ive never really experimented with editing the photos taken by one! im curious!

I have a Power shot G10. Have replaced the lens twice due to scratches from the retracting lens shutter hitting the lens.

Anyway, I do use Photoshop Elements and take the easy way of editing by using their automatic feature for about 3/4 of my pics. I think the main thing it does is jack up the contrast

Yes, I do a lot of editing. My G5 shot in RAW as well a JPG, so I do a lot of editing with those. Again, proving that I'm an amateur, my favorite program is Microsoft Image Composer which was invented roughly the same time as the light bulb. It's old but I've found it to be the easiest to use (and yes, I've used everything from MS Paint to Photoshop and everything in between.)

and after editing do you guys notice any quality gains or losses? you would think with such a small sensor it wouldnt capture very well?
