I don't know if 5.13 is enough for 40s even though that was my first thought. I'm running 4.88 for 37s and for daily driving it feels ok. I figured more like 5.38s but I have little experience with tires that large and auto trannys. That's why I'm putting the question out. I figure members like MaxPF have way more experience with these things.

The biggest thing is to figure out your cruising RPMs and then get as close as you can with the new setup. That is, unless you feel you need more gear at highway speeds, but keep in mind that this will almost always exact a fuel economy penalty.

The gear calculator tells me that with 40's, 5.13's and 5.38's both bracket your current setup. Since bigger tires are heavier and have more rotating inertia, going with the deeper gears is usually a good bet. So, my choice would be 5.38's.

Here is an excellent gear calculator: :link: Go to that link, and on both sides poke in 4L60E for the trans. Not sure what t-case you have, but I used the BW 4401 for your example. If you have the 4:1 case, then choose the NVG241OR, since they don't list the 4:1 BW case. Or, choose "Enter your own number" and enter whatever high and low ratios you want. In this case, choosing a proper t-case isn't a big deal since you are more interested in road RPMs than crawl ratio, but its always nice to see what your crawl ratio ends up being. Then put 4.88's and 37's on the left side, and 5.38's and 40's on the right, hit calculate, and see what comes up. I scroll to the bottom, which shows road speed in a given gear, and enter "55" "65" and "75" for the speeds of interest on both sides, and hit calculate again. You can enter different diff gears and re-calculate to your heart's content. I guarantee you will waste at least an hour messing around with that calculator ;)

Thanks MaxPF! What a great program. :D I didn't quite play with it for an hour, but did get some conclusions. 5.13 would give me close to factory setup, but like you said, the weight of the tire is not factored in. I think I'll go with 5.38 like you recommended. It will pretty much be spot on with my present setup. Thanks again!

So...uh...whatsup with the 37"s you're taking off?

I just re-geared to 5.13s and I'm a tad concerned my 35"s will be too small for highway use. I got gear and fender room to go bigger.

I'm a 5-cly. so....ya know.

Not yet. I'm running a Delphi box and I thought I would try it without the ram just to get stuff lined-out. I figured if I had problems, I would pull it back off and send it to Redneck for porting and a ram kit. I kept the stock H3 pump, and the whole system has yet to be tested. I'm gonna try to start it this weekend...see what I got. You happy with your steering?

As far as the tires go...I have so many little things to tweak, that its sort of on the bottom of my list. My 35" KM2's are barely used, so I thought I would try them with the 5.13s. My plan was to try them and if revs were a problem...I would upsize to the 37"s. I have my Rancho kit for sale, and if someone is interested in a wheel/tire/lift combo deal...I might let the tires & wheels go with the lift.

With 35" you might be ok. With 37s I couldn't move the wheels if there was the slightest bump. Had to be totally flat. That's why I got the ram assist. I had the factory pump modified by Howe and it handles it fine. You might want to send the pump when you send in the steering box. Have them modify it for the rest of the setup.

Hmm, your box must have a much smaller piston than the OE box on my Blazer. With a bone stock Saginaw pump I had no problems turning 37's. It took a bit more effort on my part on an obstacle, but nothing drastic. With the Vickers pump on my Cummins I can put the tire against a wall and skid my truck over - or rip the box off the frame, or blow the front cap off, or rupture the housing :asoff: I don't know how much pressure it is set for, but according to what I read, I think it is set for 2500psi, but it could be only 1750psi :whaa: Stock Sags are 1200 MAX, and aftermarkets seem to top out at 1500. Either way, it seems to eliminate the need for ram assist on my truck.... although frame reinforcement in the box mounting area is necessary :)

Anyway, /hijack. Just making another useless observation. :corn:

I felt the same way since my TJ could handle way more with the stock setup. Granted it didn't have the weight of the V8 up front. Must be the JK box design that is just underdesigned. ORE chose that box because it's what they work on all the time. I probably would have looked for something from a much larger donor vehicle. Even so, the ram assist does help with road handling. With the 40s I would probably need it anyways.

Haven't finished reading this whole thing yet, but what a cool build. I wish I had the money, time, and patience for such a build. You have some serious dedication and determination... and a bit of luck too!

More luck than anything. Had I not had the support of theses people and companies, I would have never taken on this endeavor.

Welcome back Recon! Post up some info on that front sway bar, when you get around to it. I need to do something but, due to the outboard steering box...I could end up with something completely different. Did you use a generic "universal" kit from Currie? Or did you adapt a JK system to fit?

I'll get some picks later on today. Truck is getting 5.38 gears right now. :) I would suggest you call Currie. They have many different sizes. I just gave measurements of mounting area and they sent what best fit. I don't know if it's off a specific vehicle. What I can tell you is that it's well worth it if you drive it daily.

are 40s going on before you go back overseas?

Tomorrow! :D Not going anywhere at least for 6 months so I'll be able to get quite a lot done this time. Mostly ironing out a couple of kinks that were never resolved. I also have quite a few small things that I've been collecting that I'll be installing.

Awesome! I can't wait to see this monster on 40s. As you have heard it millions of times by others your 3 is in my top 3 favorites. You bebe and 4speed have solved the problems of the H3 all with different approaches.
