On the note of high clearance skid plates, I've also read some people mention U-bolt flips and reversing/flipping the shock hanger while keeping it SUA but freeing up the space. Anyone done this? I'm interested in seeing what I can do with this idea as a backup.
I have seen this done before on other SUA trucks. You need "square" u-bolts and they get installed 90-degrees from the direction they are now. That is...the U-bolts will sit parallel to the axle tube, rather than perpendicular. Of course they get installed with the threaded ends pointing up, and this allows you to completely get rid of the spring plate from below the spring. They only thing hanging down will be the thickness of the u-bolts, and you can gain quite a bit of ground clearance by doing this mod. A lot of hard-core guys think you should never clamp a spring without a plate under them because it can create a stress point where the U-bolt sits. If this is a concern...just add a 1/4" plate under your spring pack to act as a load spreader.
Also, remember that on the H3...the shocks are mounted to the spring plates, so you'll have to move the lower shock mounts somewhere else. Like the SOA mod, you can simply weld new shock tabs to the axle tubes but, you must check your shock length and make sure they are not too long. Don't forget...you'll be moving the lower eye of the shock up an inch or two and you can accidentally shove the piston thru the top of the shocks if they are too long. You will also need some sort of "plate" on the top of the axle tubes to tighten the u-bolts against. I think it might be possible to modify the factory bump-stop perches so they can be used for this purpose. Perhaps as simple as drilling some holes in them to accept the new u-bolts? Whatever the case...you'll have to fab all of this yourself. No kit or anything that I'm aware of. When you're done it should look like this:
Lastly...because your bump stops will now have a quadrant of nasty sharp bolts sticking up thru them...you'll want to make sure the yellow bump stops don't come into contact with them and tear them up. You might have to get creative like this guy did. He built a small tower so the bump has a smooth landing pad (I'm actually running something very similar to this on my SOA axle)...
