My son shot his first deer!! PICS!

My son, who is 7 shot his first deer over the holidays on our family hunting land. He used a shortened stock remington 308. I know, one hell of a gun for a 7 year old. I didn't want him to shoot the gun until he had a deer in the cross hairs because I didn't want him to get nervous about the gun instead of focusing on the deer. He had a chance to shoot and 8 point the day before, but the buck was too close to the stand and he was too short and could not get the angle on him. The next evening he missed the first time on a decent size doe, he wasn't holding the gun good and he got scope ringed right above his eye. Scared the hell out of him and thought he was done for good. He cried for a few minuites and then started to laugh when he realized he wasn't hurt. About an hour later three does walked out into the field at about 75 yds. He asked if he could try again. He picked the largest one and took his time and slowly squeezed the trigger. He dropped a 110 lb doe in her tracks. He was sooooooo happy. He also kept his spent brass. Anyway here are a few pics..

Loins are getting grilled and fried tonight for the BCS National Championship Game. Go Tigers, beat Bama, again. LOL.

I never let him shoot anything over a 22LR before. I was nervous the 308 was too much for him, but its all we had in a small gun and I didn't wan't to risk him laming one with a lesser caliber.

Pretty cool moment, huh? My two oldest got their first ones at 7 and 9 the same season. That year they said they wanted to go hunting, so I told them they had to pass Hunter Ed on their own. Hardest thing I have ever done was sit there and watch them take that 90 question test and watch them mark a question wrong and not say anything! But they both passed with flying colors. Then I told them they had to shoot well enough to kill a deer. We made a cardboard deer sillouette and I bought them a Mossberg ATR-100 youth model in .243. They were able to hold grapefruit sized groups at 80 yards, so I figured I better put up, 'cause they had done their part!

My second boy got his the first morning out. One shot right through the heart/lugs at about 70 yards. It ran about 70 yards and dropped dead.

My oldest got his a few days later. It walked out into the trail about 50 yards ahead of us, so I got down so he could use my shoulder as a rest. He was breathing hard and shaking, and couldn't hold steady so he didn't take the shot and it walked off. I showed him how to slow down his breathing, and then I saw the deer about 60 yards off the trail. This tiime he took a shot and it ran about 20' and stopped. He said he was sure he had hit it, so I told him to shoot it again. It was quartering towards us, so we talked about where to aim, and he knew the right spot. Second round went right in the front of the shoulder, breaking it, and right into the heart/lungs and it dropped right there. We later found his first shot went in right behind the last rib. It was a good lesson for him.

Outstanding! We need more young hunters. Can't tell you the number of cases of scope rash I have seen at the range, even among some who knew better. No reason to be embarrassed. Sounds like you have many years of great times ahead with your son.

Good for him! I've never hunted but all of my roommates do. All I can say is I didn't understand it before college, but after tasting some homemade deer-jerky....I'm a big advocate for responsible hunting.

First time i went hunting, shot a turkey, and i was shocked at how stupid they are, the rest of the turkeys just kept chilling next to the dead one!!

I would rather let him shoot a gun before I would let him get a dirt bike. I just don't think he's ready for the dirt bike yet. Maybe something with a full roll cage, lol.
