Cheap bolt on mod

Heh, I was just reading the first 11 pages of a 60+ page thread over on overland about axes. I couldn't believe how uppity people were getting about having an ax mounted on your vehicle. I'm amazed at how pissy people will get over hi-lifts, shovels, axes, sand ladders, etc, etc. The ax thing was kind of entertaining, as there quickly was an argument about just bringing a chainsaw with you instead (I think it started on the very first page and went at least up till page 11), or just use a bow saw because it's faster than an ax. Never mind the fact that not everyone can afford a chainsaw that is worth actually having, or maintain it properly, or even operate it safely.
And bow saws are nice, but finding decent replacement blades is surprisingly hard to do locally (the one replacement blade Lowes carries for example is utter crap, I still need to get some extra change and order a good one online), and you *could* try to resharpen a bow saw blade, but it's faster to just buy a new blade for it. An ax at least you can keep it sharp with nothing more than a single cut file, or use a stone as well, anywhere, any time, and quickly too.
So much drama over someone putting an ax on their truck, which along with a shovel are the simplest tools anyone could ever take with them, yet could be the most useful out of anything else you bring.
And personally, while right now I just have a cheap, crappy double bit Chinese ax with a fiberglass handle I can take with me, I'm eventually going to get myself a nice, properly made ax (and a hatchet), and I sure as heck am not going to be permanently mounting it on the outside of my vehicle, thank you very much. I think anyone that has an ax on the outside of their vehicle either only puts it there when they are going offroading, or it's a piece of crap with soft steel that they don't know how to even use properly in the first place. An ax is an outdoor tool, but like many other outdoor tools, it's not something you should be keeping outdoors 100% of the time. I'll probably end of setting up a mount for it inside the H3.
But I guess another part is that I'm of the Boy Scout mentality of always being prepared. There are some things I would like to always have with me. On my person it's a pocket knife, chapstick, and a thumbdrive with all of my important stuff on it, and I should also get myself a nice small carry pistol (I have a 1911, but that can be a bit burdensome at times to always have on). I usually also carry a handkerchief. In my H3 it'd be a shovel, ax, recovery gear, bow saw, basic tools, tire repair kit, gloves, first aid kit, 72 hour kit (since my truck is always with me, it's better than leaving it at home where I might not be able to get to it if the need arises), and probably a few other things I'm not thinking of right now. But this is just me, and I know there are many others who don't feel it's necessary to carry any of this or all of this all the time, and that's just fine.

That's a funny pic, and people that always carry an ax on the outside of their trucks are silly and uninformed.

If you're going to do a mod, don't go half way.
I'd have refabbed the handle on that snow brush to adapt a center lock something like the new roto-pax use. It would be a clean install, lockable and easy to take off for use.
When I first saw this pic I'd have sworn it was my father-in-laws Jeep but realized it wasn't zip ties holding the thing on.........(rest in peace Greg)

I have an Axe and a Shovel mounted outside of my rig, and I keep them there 24/7, they has survived with no problem, used many times, and as long as it's maintained like all things on your vehicle should be, it will last for a long time.
