How To Plasti Dip Emblems

Plasti Dip is a great way to black out emblems or other chrome parts. It is a plastic spray on coating that does not require major prep work, aside from cleaning the area and can be removed if you change your mind or if it gets damaged. All without leaving a mark. It can be found for about $6 at Home Depot or online. I have seen black and red available in the aerosol cans.

Gunner had posted this site up in another thread it is a great resource on Plasti Dip techniques. Dipyourcar.com

I followed the suggestions made by this video:

This is a breakdown of the steps.
 • Clean the surface
 • Mask off area. Leave about a quarter of an inch between the emblem and the masking tape. this will make peeling the excess Plasti Dip off much easier.
 • Spray on first light coat will be about 50% coverage then wait 15 minutes (avoid doing in direct sun light)
 • apply next 3 coats. These coats can be slightly heavier Wait 15 minutes in between coats.
 • wait 30 minutes after last coat then remove masking tape.
 • Peel off excess Plasti Dip around emblems (the more Plasti Dip around the emblem the easier it is to peel off) and wipe off any over spray.

Masked off emblem.
I would suggest leaving more room between the tape and the emblem then I did as this will make removal of the excess Plasti Dip much easier.

This is a great product and very simple to do. Here is another example Door handles done by Hummer InvesmentsINC.

Awesome!! Thanks for the great write-up! I may try this in the future. I have black vinyl stickers on the emblems now, but they'll peel eventually. Does plasti-dip come in any other colors? I would like black "H"s and grey (or maybe maroon) "3"s -- just for some detail.

I found a lot of good info and videos on www.dipyourcar.com -- what an interesting product that stuff is. Sort of like super strong spandex in a can, or something... :) Also, yes: They can make custom plasti-dip colors for you. I may inquire about a maroon.

Thanks again for sharing, Nacho.

Also remember when using PD the more coats (thicker) you apply the easier it is to peel off later.

I don't know much about plasti-dip. How is it different from the typical spray can paint?

Sprays the same except it's MUCH more forgiving. Don't get me wrong it will still run and such but it lays really nice in comparison. And... if you **** it up just let it dry, peel it off and start over. :)

Not sure... Haven't tested that myself. Depends on what's doing the pin stripping I would imagine. I can tell you that it holds up to automatic car washes and curbs....................

Honestly if you're on the fence head to your local home repair mega store and pick up a can. OR order it online... and give it a try on something. I think you'll be impressed.

Most definitely!!! You can cover all 5 with one can. I just did a set of 20's (for a different vehicle) with 2 cans.

I plasti dipped my emblems about 3/4 months ago on the H3 and its held up really good, I also plasti dipped my mustang's emblems a while ago and they also have held up, I like the texture of the pasti dip compared to regular paint to and you can always redo it.

WOW, I was kinda skeptical at first but this stuff seems like the real deal. I will probably try it out, I am just puzzled on how it comes right off if you peel it but lasts through car washes and the elements...and if you screw up it comes right off. Tim I should have tried this first LOL

Also, plastidipping your entire car?? I wonder how that holds up in the elements, especially off road. I will not be plasti dipping the H3 but I have a buddy that is doing a budget build on a bronco....HMMMM

I think you would have to hit some thick brush to scrap it off but we will see after I take it on the trails.

I have researched every corner of the internet on this stuff. Seems like the people that use it love it and the people that hate on it havent used it.

I have seen entire cars plasti dipped, even high end expensive cars. I also have seen a lot of jeep guys use this stuff on their rims and emblems with no issues. I would say that painting my emblems with regular paint has held up for about a year, now it needs some touch up. If plasti dip lasts a year or more I will be hooked. I may go plasti dip crazy when I get the hummer back from the dealership in a few days...

Even if the PlastiDip does not last a year you can peel it off and start all over No prep work, no pulling off emblems to repaint. If you do want it more durable do a few extra coats.
