Winch primer, please?

So I read the write-up on Schwarttzy's site about the hidden mount and what size/rating winch will fit. As much wrenching and modding as I have done, though, I don't know much about winches - specifically, how to mount them. Do I need a special bumper? Or just a mounting plate? Which mounts (if necessary) are good, and are the cheap ones usable or tinny POS? Any and all input, opinions, and experience are welcome. TIA.

No, you dont need a special bumper for a winch (but a ThorParts bumper looks AWESOME). You do need a winch plate that goes between (top or bottom) of the frame behind the D rings. I dont know what is considered "cheap" but I see pleny of good reviews for those $40 plates.

I took a different route...

the winch plate is welded and bolted to the frame horns.

been this way for years, works excellent - I did cut a hole in the radiator cover to access the controls.
