I recommend carry chains or cables. I have come across the CHP/Caltrans road block a bunch of times. A couple of times I have had to get out and show them that I am carrying them. If I didn't have them, I would have been turned around.

Did you show them the whips too? :whaa:

I got the "Best quality" low profile CLASS S diamond chains from :link:. Keep in mind the shipping time to So Cal is 4 business days. I called and got the weight, 18 lbs for a pair. I talked to my service rep at Tustin Hummer and after I told him that the cable type chains didn't meet the class S requirements, he agreed that it would be better to get the class S diamond chains. At 18 lbs per pair they aren’t very heavy duty, but they will get me past a chains check point, add minimal weight to my cargo load and the low profile minimizes the probability of damaging the inner fenders. My chains were $128.99 plus I got their recommenced spring chain tensioners and a carrying case. Total damages $200.

Any update on timeframe for the snow run?

I may have a few passengers and a portable gas grill, one of my friends offered to cook and prepare some food [steak on a bun, soup in thermos jugs, etc] if there's interest instead of having the usual trail sandwiches and such :)

That would be a cool change up from our normal lunch.

I had originally aimed for the 14th or 21st of Jan. We have one thing lacking for a snow run right now. The key thing - snow. Hopefully we get some between then and now. Once we do get some snow, I need to find some time to do a pre run also. Hopefully someone else would be up for a pre run

I could probably swing that.

I wasn't going to go, but now I'm leaning towards going, after hearing about the food. LOL I don't have tire chains to play in the snow, and right now don't have the funds to get them. So if there's not any snow I'm going also the later date works best for me. If I do go I might have a full rig of back seat drivers. That's only a grand total of 4.

Anyone want to do some sort of a mini-run this weekend? Turns out I have MLK day off so that makes it a 3 day weekend for me, I 'm availble for going somewhere [big bear, gold mountain, 2n17x, etc] on Sunday or Monday....

Up for doing something as long as I get my truck done by Friday. John, as far as chains, none required around here. Still no snow

Is this in addition to the Big Bear No Snow run on the 21st or has the date been changed? I don't know if I can make it Sunday, but definitely not Monday. What time do you think we'll be done Sunday? I have a doctors appointment early Monday morning.

No I don't mean to intefere with any planned trips, my Dad's in town this weekend and after all these years hes never been out on a trail with me in the H1 [we did Pismo for an hour but that doesn't really count]. I want to go on a short day run Sunday or Monday [Saturday I got to work on the truck and do a few errands] so I figure I might get a small group of 3-4 people going somewhere.
