AZ- June 9 trail ideas?

I'm stuck on trail ideas. Two of my preferred trails are both closed due to fire right now. Third one, Coke Ovens, may be partially inaccessible due to the private landowner restricting access.

Charouleau Gap? Could do that one.

What else? Need ideas please.

Don't know if you'd have any paint left afterwards. That's the scratchiest trail I've been on, mostly because (I think) it is very rarely used by vehicles.

Charleaux Gap was a Jeep trail. This one sounds like a quad trail. H1s might could bull their way through but I doubt it would buff out.

I would run the Gap in our H3 any day. You guys may have to head our way to go wheeling until the fires are under control...and maybe even for awhile after that.

If you can't come up with something local, you can always come run with us. Hint hint lol

Great suggestion. I was thinking Pyeatt but I've never run it. Who's gonna lead?

So, you gonna try the final obstacle?

I was thinking it would be nice to do a run mid-way between LA and Tucson and have a California & Arizona get together. Maybe Sleeping Princess trail which is between Laughlin NV and Kingman AZ? Laughlin is 4 hours from Phoenix, 5 hours from LA and 6 hours from Tucson and has a lot of places to stay.

Sleeping Princess looks like a good trail. It is challenging but not impossible with great scenery. For those who want more of a challenge, they can try Hell’s Half Mile and/or the Bob Miller Extension. Here is a :link: to a Heep trip report.

I like this idea. When are you planning on setting it up Mike?

I did Pyette Draw a few long years ago and it's not a friend of long-wheelbase, low clearance trucks like the T (you guys will be dragging me off of rock steps and ledges all day long)! I did it in a short-wheelbase, high clearance rig ('86 CJ7).

It's not a trail for newbs and carnage (body panels, suspension and powertrain) is a good possibility. We would also need a few rigs with winches to help rigs clear the waterfall. Dwaine's Scorpion is made for this type of trail - not too sure about stock H3s with 32" or 33" inch tires. Rear locker, UCP and rock sliders would be "mandatory" rig equipment for this trail, IMO. It's been a while since I was on it, so I'm not sure how the bypass trail is.

...and this is the "easier" of the 2 lines at the waterfall.

...here's the harder line (watch this video all the way to the end).

Jerry S. took his 3 on it a year or two ago. From what I understand each obstacle also has bypasses with the road that runs along the trail. Don't know if we would try the waterfall but I've also heard that is has changed a bit with more broken rock.

Anyway, that's just one for discussion. More ideas needed!

I agree with Dave, The tough line seems like a buggy only, 40in tire needed obstacle, I know that videos are deceiving but I think once I get my truck done up some more I could do the easier line with no winch. I see the lack of tread and the low hanging deavers a problem right now but those two liabilities should be taken care of sooner then later.

We can do Sycamore Creek. It is generally considered a moderate trail with no significant obstacles. Doesn't mean people can't get into trouble. It has great scenery but is a bit short in length - 3 hours maybe? Those looking for more could then head out to the Butcher Jones / Saguaro Lake area with the playground, hills and lake access.

One optional obstacle (bit steeper than it looks)

A slippery, steep, rutted descent

A couple of water crossings. Height of course varies throughout the year

Un-fun optional hill. Very steep, rutted and slippery.

Bad lines do exist

I have never taken this hill and still don't plan to

But, the more I think about it I think a Sycamore Creek/Saguaro Lake run may be the best idea.
