Steering Position Sensor issues.

I have been lazily chasing my traction control failure. So I finally stopped being cheap and bought a bidirectional scanner, a Foxwell NT809BT from Amazon for $300 used like new. It works great, took me 5 minuets to find what was throwing the code, C0710 Steering position malfunction. But here is the weird thing, it reads live data and and center it is right on and left to right, it only goes red when it passes the 720 deg mark. Stops at 832, more steering due to SAS. I reset the code and drove it down the street in a straight line, after 1000 feet the code came back in with almost no steering input. Has anyone else seen this before, I plan on ordering a sensor as a precaution along with new upper and lower shaft, another $400.

That sucks. I wonder if there’s something more simple in the sensor aspect that can fix it/replace it.

How long have you owned the truck? Have you ever replaced the intermediate steering shaft? Did you try doing a reset? I don't know your problem and I can't see all the things you are seeing, but just speculating ...what comes to mind is:

1) SAS might have been damaged from a previous steering part replacement. Yer supposed to 'lock' the steering column with a pin during the process.

2) The intermediate shaft wasn't welded right and "center" isn't actually center. Even if it was reset. The intermediate shaft I received a couple yrs ago, was welded 'off-center' a little. I adjusted the tie rods.

3) There's debris or something inside the SA sensor which either cleaning may resolve (??)

4) You need a new steering sensor

1. Traction control issues was before SAS, I've been busy addressing more important issues (lazy)
2, Original shafts, new ones on order.
3. Maybe
4. New one on order.

When holidays are over, will replace all of it and keep the fingers crossed.

Sounds like you're on top of it.

How do you like the scan tool? I've browsed them a few times. What's the good/bad & ugly of them? I've also checked out the higher-end Launch units too. I'm more a Snap-on oriented, but at this point, it's getting harder to justify the software update costs? That's where the Foxwell and Launch products work out a lot cheaper.

Does your Foxwell, do older OBD-I vehicles?

I like it for what my abilities are. It does far more than what I understand for now. I have bleed the brakes and cycled many of the systems which it cool. Honestly the main reason was for tracking down codes that the $10 readers can't do.
