I went out this Sunday with a new group that I found locally on line. We met at 11 AM at the end of pavement at a nearby logging road, and aired down. The Forum Admin was the guy who came out in his 6" lifted Taco, and we discussed goals for the day. He wanted to find a mountaintop cabin we'd heard about, and I wanted to try a fairly technical trail that I wasn't going to tackle solo. We had time for both, so we headed for the legendary cabin first, as the branch to it was nearest. On the way up the steep deactivated logging road, we met another small group of trucks, 2 more lifted Tacos and a lifted F150. After chatting for a bit, we learned that the F150 driver had a family connection to the cabin, and led us right to the short trail that we hiked in for a look, then sat at a rustic picnic table on a rocky point out front, looking over the Fraser Valley, 4,000' below.
After hitting that goal, Darren led me to the short, but tough trail to the riverbank in the valley of the Norrish FSR. There were several 18" creek crossings over basketball sized boulders, and lots of brush for trail pinstripes, and the the final descent to the riverbank, which was only about 2 car lengths long, but very steep, with large boulders sticking out of loose sandy soil. We both found the right line down, with only 1 diff bump each, but I wasn't too sure about going back up, since the only other vehicles on the shoreline sandbar were 3 Wranglers, with 8" lifts and 40" tires, kind of intimidating. We talked with them for a bit, then decided it was time to attempt the exit, with Darren's Taco leading, so he could turn around on the trail above and winch me if needed. Once he was clear, I went low/low/locked, and just drove straight up that slope with no problem at all, surprising myself, and the Jeepers, who actually applauded!
It was a great day out, with a new found wheeling buddy, and wonderful spring weather. I got home at sunset, tired and happy
