I agree on the Duramax conversion. That might at least give a guy the ability to integrate a little more easily. But if the C engine is 'complete' that's tempting. I still think yer better off just rebuilding an original engine unless one is looking for a cool project.
Having driven a TDI Jetta for many years and worked on diesels, they have their perculiarities and shortcomings too, which a lot of guys tend to gloss over. But overall for a fun project or all-out wheeler, yeah, diesel would be cool and practical.
